The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition has been officially updated to Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Soon after the HTC One GPE and the LG G Pad 8.3 GPE received the Android 4.4.2, the Nexus-experience Galaxy S4 got updated to the same firmware version. Actually, Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition’s firmware reads I9505GUEUCML4, which is the Android 4.4.2 KOT49H update that is the latest available for the supported Nexus devices and GPE handsets.
Aside of the 4.4.2-specific changes, the I9505GUEUCML4 update for Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition also brings a fix for one of the bugs that was affecting the Samsung terminal. Soon after the first KitKat build hit the S4 GPE, users reported that HSPA/HSPA+ connections were being displayed as “3G” instead of “H,” but you will no longer experience this inconvenience after you update your Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition to Android 4.4.2.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE Android 4.4.2 OTA update is being rolled out in stages, therefore you might not be able to download and install it on your device right away. Instead of keeping your eyes on the notifications area waiting for the system update message to pop up you can also check for the update manually under Settings > About phone > System Update > Check for updates. If this doesn’t work it might mean that you will have to wait a few more days for the update to be pushed on your terminal.
In case you down’t want to wait until the Android 4.4.2 OTA update is made available for your Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition, you can download the OTA file from Google’s server, then manually flash it to your device using adb sideload or any other custom recovery.
As a refresher, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition brings a 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, Snapragon 600 SoC with four Krait 300 cores clocked at 1.9 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 13 MP camera mounted on the back, 16 GB of micro-SD expandable storage, and all the connectivity features worthy of a modern smartphone, including WiFi in all standards, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, and microUSB 2.0.
