Odin is a small Windows tool that can be used to update, root or install new ROMs on Samsung smartphones and tablets.
If you’re looking for a tool that will help you flash new official ROMs on your Samsung device, then the Odin3 v3.10.6 is the one that you should use. It works for all the Android OS versions including the Android 5.1 Lollipop builds. Lollipop is the latest Android version that was released at the date this article was posted.
Odin3 v3.10.6 is a stable application that currently works only with Windows computers and it allows its users to flash bootloaders, kernels, tar.md5 firmware files of official Android OS, custom Recoveries, custom kernels, radios, and almost any other type of file that your phone / tablet might need.
Odin is great for advanced users of Samsung devices, as it allows them to flash new official firmware before the roll out arrives in their region. Samsung usually launches updates in stages and not all users are getting the new files at the same time, which means that they need to look at alternative updating methods.
Note that Odin3 v3.10.6 needs to recognize your smartphone when it is connected to your PC and for that you will need to install the Samsung USB Drivers. Download the drivers from here and install them on your PC.
Make sure that USB Debugging is enabled on your phone before connecting it to computers and using Odin 3.10.6 tool. If Developer Options is not enabled on your PC, then you will need to unhide it first:
- Go to Settings> About Device, scroll down and tap 7 times on the Build Number section. Return to Settings and there you will find a new menu called “Developer Options”, open it and enable it too. Scroll down through the Developer Options menu and tick the “USB Debugging” check box.
- Now your phone will be detected by your PC every time you connect it via USB cable and you’re free to flash new Android firmware files.
