The Facebook Messenger app for Android has just received a new update that adds a new design for the conversation thread and support for texting with Messenger.
With the new feature the text messages you receive on your mobile phone can be viewed with the Facebook Messenger app. In order not to create confusion or make you miss important messages, each SMS you will receive will also arrive in your phone’s Facebook Messenger inbox. For privacy reasons, the text messages will not be synced with the web version of the social network, as they will only be available on the Messenger app installed on the smartphone that received the SMS.
You should know that the SMS support is only available for certain Android smartphones. For the time being, the list of supported devices includes models like HTC EVO 3D, HTC One X, HTC Wildfire S, LG Optimus Black, LG Optimus Hub, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Y.
The list of new features also include a new slide-out panel where you can see which of your friends is online on Facebook. The conversations are now grouped in a thread system, allowing you to follow the discussion more easily. The “last active” indicator besides each user tells you when your friend was online last time. The “Favorites” section groups the users you are frequently chatting with.
Courtesy of the new features, the Facebook Messenger application aims to become the central location for all forms of communication on your mobile phone. Next to the Android version, Facebook will also launch an update app for the Apple iOS devices, which will not include support for text messages. It seems that the Cupertino-based company was the one that didn’t allowed SMS threading inside the FB Messenger app.
