Flash Android 4.3 Google Play Edition v2.0 for Sony Xperia Z

The Sony Xperia Z smartphone has received a new custom ROM that will help you flash one of the first custom Android 4.3 builds. Read this entire post and you should be able to complete the installation at your first attempt without losing any important data in the process.

Android 4.3 Google Play Edition v2.0 is based on stock Android 4.3 JSS15J firmware, it is rooted and deodexed, it brings the stock Google Play edition experience, features PIE and HALO from Paranoid Android. This new custom ROM is based on the Google Play Edition ROM builds that have been released with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One GE editions.

In order to successfully install this new custom ROM you will first have to take a look at the preparation info below:

  • use this post only with the Sony Xperia Z smartphone.
  • do not attempt to flash the files you find here on any other Android device.
  • your device has to be factory unlocked, rooted and running a custom Recovery.
  • the tutorial will ask you to factory reset your device, which is why you should create backups of all the files that are currently stored on your device.
  • use the CWM or TWRP Recovery mode to create a full NANDROID backup of your currently installed ROM. The Recovery version used depends on the one installed on your device.
  • this guide will work with both CWN and TWRP Recovery.
  • enable USB Debugging from Developer Options.
  • Make sure that your Xperia Z battery has enough power left before completely switching off.
  • If you want to backup SMS, Call Logs info and APN Internet Settings, then you should use these tools for Android: SMS backup & restore | Call Logs backup & restore | APN Settings Backup & Restore. Root access is required for some of these apps.
  • Remember to sync the Contacts info with your default Gmail account.
  • Read the entire tutorial and don’t skip any steps listed below.
  • Do not held us responsible in case the Sony Xperia Z gets bricked in the process or you lose any important data files.

How to flash Android 4.3 Google Play Edition v2.0 for Sony Xperia Z:

  1. Download Android 4.3 Google Play Edition ROM from here or here.
    > don’t unzip the archive.
  2. Connect your Xperia Z with your computer, then move the downloaded zip to your phone’s internal SDcard.
  3. After the files are copied successfully, you should disconnect your smartphone from your PC.
  4. Power off the Xperia Z.
  5. Boot the device into Recovery Mode and get to the next step when the CWM / TWRP Recovery main screen appears.
  6. First you need to create a NANDROID backup of the ROM that is currently installed on your device:
    > CWM Recovery: select ‘backup and restore’ option. Confirm that you wish to make a backup.
    > TWRP Recovery: press Backup, select the system parts you wish to backup and confirm.
  7. Next, apply the ‘factory reset’:
    > CWM Recovery: select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’, confirm the process.
    > TWRP Recovery: press Wipe button, then Factory Reset. Confirm.
  8. Now you can flash the new custom ROM for your Xperia Z:
    > CWM: select ‘install zip from sdcard’ option, then ‘choose zip from sdcard’. Find the Android 4.3 Google Play Edition zip for Xperia Z and confirm the installation.
    > TWRP: press Install, then browse your smartphone’s internal SDcard and load the custom ROM file. Confirm that you wish to flash it using the blue button listed at the bottom of the screen.
  9. Return to the main Recovery Mode menu when the file is flashed with success.
  10. Reboot your smartphone into normal mode and then enter your Google Account details to take control over your phone.

Test all the new functions and services added by the Android 4.3 GE v2.0 custom ROM. Check to see if your Xperia Z works better with the new OS. If you didn’t manage to complete the installation at your first attempt, then you should repeat the entire tutorial. If you don’t like this new ROM, then you can easily restore your smartphone to its previous ROM using the Nandroid backup file created in step 6.
