Flash CM10.1 M1 custom ROM for Google Nexus 7 GSM International

CyanogenMod 10.1 M-Series custom ROM has been launched for the Nexus 7 tablet device. You can learn how to install it on yours by reading the instructions that I have listed in this article.

It is a tutorial for advanced users of Google Nexus 7 that wish to test the new CM10.1 M1 build ROM. The new ROM comes with tons of new features and functions and, it is based on the Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. It is a great ROM and if you want to benefit from tons of new customization features, then you should use this post. Make sure that you’re an advanced Android user and that you know what you’re doing before starting this tutorial.

All the instructions listed here are destined to be applied by power-users and ROM tinkerers. In order to successfully flash this official CM10.1 M1 ROM on your Nexus 7 tablet, you will need to read the guidelines below:

  • This is a Monthly release of the CM10.1 and it is more stable than the CM 10.1 Nightlies. However, it is no final release and it might still be somewhat unstable and it might also feature some bugs and errors.
  • The ROM file listed in this post can be flashed only on the Google Nexus 7 GSM International variant. Do not attempt to flash the files on any other variant of Nexus 7 variant.
  • Your tablet has to be on unlocked bootloader, rooted and running a custom Recovery image. Without these you won’t be able to flash the CM 10.1 M1 OS.
  • Use the custom Recovery mode to create a full backup of your current ROM. This will set a restore point for your device and you can use it in case your device doesn’t boot after installing the new ROM.
  • Enable the USB debugging option for your device from the Android Developer Options menu.
  • It is a guide for advanced users and you shouldn’t blame us in case something goes wrong during the installation of this new ROM.
  • We cannot be held responsible for any data loss. Make sure that you move all the important files on your tablet’s internal SD card storage. This will be the only part of your device that won’t be changed in the process.
  • Read all the instructions that I’ve listed and make sure not to skip any of them.

NOTE: those users who already have a CM 10.1-based ROM on their tablets running shouldn’t ‘factory reset’ their devices. One of the steps in the tutorial will ask you to wipe the data from the device, but if you’re already running the same ROM, but of previous version, then you can flash this new M-series build.

All the guidelines above should help you complete the installation of this new ROM at your first attempt.

How to install the CM 10.1 M1 Custom ROM on your Google Nexus 7 GSM International:

  1. Download the ROM from HERE. Don’t unzip its contents and place the file on your PC desktop screen.
  2. Download the Gapps from HERE. This will install all the Google application for your phone. Don’t extract the contents of the zip.
  3. Connect your tablet to your computer and move both files on its internal SDcard. Disconnect the tablet from PC when the files are successfully moved.
  4. Power off your tablet device.
  5. Boot your tablet into CWM Recovery mode by pressing at the same time Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons. Don’t release the buttons until the custom recovery mode loads. NOTE: You can also use the TWRP Recovery.
  6. Create a Nandroid backup of your current ROM using the ‘backup and restore’ option from CWM Recovery selection menu. When the backup is completed you can get to the next step. NOTE: if you already have such backup then you can skip this step.
  7. Now, select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’ option and confirm this process.
  8. Select ‘install zip from sdcard’ and then from the new menu select ‘choose zip from sdcard’. Find the CM10.1 M1 custom ROM zip and confirm that you want to install it on your smartphone.
  9. Next, select once again ‘choose zip from sdcard’. Find the ‘gapps’ zip and install it.
  10. Get to the main CWM Recovery menu when the CM 10.1 M1 ROM and Gapps files have been successfully installed.
  11. Select ‘reboot system now’.
  12. Now your device will start its first boot process with this new ROM and you should wait at least 5 minutes for it to complete.
  13. Enter the Google Account details and then take control over your device once again.
  14. Test all of its new functions and use the comments section to tell us which one impressed you the most.

NOTE: If the first boot process takes over 10 minutes to complete, then the custom ROM wasn’t installed successfully. Power off the device completely and then you will need to repeat the entire installation starting with step 5. Eventually, the new CyanogenMod 10.1 M1 custom ROM will install.

If you hit any roadblocks or you’re unsure about installing this ROM, then you should leave a detailed comment at the end of this post. We will try to come up with a solution for you.
