Flash SlimKat Beta Android 4.4.2 Weekly ROM for Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300

Flash SlimKat Beta 4.4.2 KitKat for Galaxy S3 I9300

SlimKat beta is now live for the Galaxy S3 I9300. Use this guide if you want to learn how to successfully install it on your device.

SlimKat is a smaller version of a custom ROM, as it doesn’t incorporate all features that you usually find in CM, Paranoid Android or other big custom KitKat ROMs. It is destined to be used by those Galaxy S3 users who want their phone to run as smooth as possible.

It is not an official Samsung update, but it is based on AOSP KitKat and it packs some of its own functions. It currently has reached the Weekly or Nightly builds, this means that it cannot be used as a stable build and you should only use it for testing a pure KitKat experience.

This is a custom ROM that is based on AOSP Android 4.4.2 KitKat and on other similar custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod, AOKP and Paranoid Android. More info about this release can be found at this XDA thread here.

Before starting the installation you will have to take a look at the preparation guide below:

  • Use this tutorial only with the Samsung Galaxy S3 model number I9300.
    - do not attempt to install the ROM that you will find in  this post on any other Android device.
  • Your device has to be rooted and running the latest CWM Recovery image.
    - TWRP Recovery will also work with this guide.
    - whichever custom Recovery you decide to use make sure that it is updated to its latest version.
  • It is recommended for you to create a full NANDROID Backup of the installed ROM:
    - this step is listed in the tutorial and you shouldn’t skip it, as it sets a restore point for your phone.
  • Factory Reset is required for your phone.
    - this step is shown in the tutorial, so you shouldn’t skip it.
    - factory reset will delete all data from the system partition, while the internal / external storage won’t be affected by this tutorial.
  • Backup data from installed applications and SMS text messages using Helium tool for Android here.
  • Sync Contacts info with your default Gmail account.
    - guide here for those of you who don’t know how to do it.
  • Enable USB Debugging from Developer Options menu.
  • Check the phone’s battery charge level and make sure that it is over 50%, this will prevent the smartphone from switching off in the middle of the installation.
  • This is a guide for advanced users, do not skip any steps and don’t blame us in case something goes wrong leading to a bricked device or losing any type of data files.
  • Read the entire tutorial before starting the installation.
  • If you cannot complete the guide, then you can always choose to ask for extra help in comments.

Since you’ve read all of the above you can continue to the next part of this post and learn how to successfully update your Galaxy S3 with a custom KitKat ROM.
