As you know, a custom ROM firmware can be installed on an Android device only by using a custom recovery image. Now, if we are to talk about Android 4.4 based ROMs, most of the updates can be flashed only by using the latest version of TWRP or CWM recovery. Unfortunately CWM is not officially available for all the Android smartphones or tablets out there, the same applying for the HTC One Max (Verizon, Sprint, China and International models) phone. So, because of that, during the present tutorial I will show you how to flash the latest version of TWRP recovery (compatible with Android 4.4 custom ROMs) on your HTC One Max (the tutorial is compatible with the Verizon, Sprint, China and International model of the smartphone) by using a one-click install method.
Updating with a custom ROM firmware is an operation used by many Android users. A custom update usually brings the latest version of Android OS (in our case Android 4.4 KitKat firmware) which is not available for the non-Nexus handsets out there. Also, an unofficial software usually brings extra features that can be used for powering up the performances of your Android device – in our case of your HTC One Max. So, installing an Android 4.4 based custom ROM might not be an option for you, especially if you are an advanced user who wants to use its smartphone on full power.
But, as already stated, when trying to apply a custom Android update, a custom recovery image will be required. Now, getting CWM or TWRP recovery is an easy task to perform, though for the Android 4.4 firmware you can only use the only versions of these apps – the same are not yet official available for your Verizon, Sprint, China and International models of the HTC One Max. Because of that you will have to consider in flashing an unofficial custom recovery image, which is a tool developed by third party devs – in our case we should thanks those of xda-developers for the present step by step guide.
This tutorial will show you a one-click install method that will easily flash TWRP recovery on your HTC One Max. Usually, a one-click installation guide refers to a procedure that can be easily completed even by a newbie as a tool or generic program will do all the work for you. The same is happening here, where the latest version of TWRP recovery will be installed on your One Max.
Now, TWRP recovery is, as I have already told you, a custom recovery image. A custom recovery image is quite different from the stock one which comes pre-installed on any Android device. That’s why TWRP recovery can be used for complex and also unofficial operations like flashing a custom ROM, installing a custom kernel, overclocking the Android device, remove bloatware, wipe data, clear cache, make Nandroid backups, gaining root access and so on. These operations can’t be performed with the stock recovery, so if you want to tweak your HTC One Max then you do have to apply this TWRP recovery tool.
TWRP recovery is actually the touch and improved version of CWM recovery. The tool is coming with great features and with an easily to use user interface. That’s why TWRP recovery can be easily used by anyone who wants to update their HTC One Max with a custom ROM, or for doing many other unofficial operations. The goal is of course in powering up the performances of your smartphone.
Usually, a custom recovery image can be installed only on a rooted device. Well, if you use this one-click installation guide, root access doesn’t have to be ensured on your HTC One Max. But, the bootloader of your phone must be though unlocked. The bootloader is a small program that loads the OS and some in built programs from the ROM memory into the RAM one each time you power up your One Max. As you can already tell, when buying a new smartphone, it will be delivered with a locked bootloader, which is something like a factory or default restriction. It is your job in unlocking the same, if you want to take your Android device to a new level of performance – in our case for being able to apply TWRP recovery.
Be aware as by unlocking the bootloader, the warranty of your Android device will get void. So, if you want to resume this guide, you will lose the warranty. Don’t worry, as the same can be restored afterwards. In order to do so you have to relock the bootloader by using a compatible tutorial or by downgrading your device to stock Android OS, or by applying an OTA release of Android firmware.
After unlocking the bootloader of your phone, the best will be to backup the HTC One Max data; your personal info, accounts or data might get corrupted while you will try to install TWRP recovery, so in order to keep everything that’s important for you in safe hands, I recommend you to use suitable backup and restore apps from Google Play before doing anything else. As you know, the backup operation is indicated before any unofficial or custom operation, including flashing an official software manually.
In order to succeed with the present tutorial, you will have to use a computer. On the same you will download the one-click tool that will easily install TWRP recovery on your Verizon, Sprint, China and International model of HTC One Max. Good; but before doing that, on your computer temporarily disable the antivirus and any other security protection, because these programs might interfere with the flashing procedure. Your phone must have at least 60% power left, or else it might get turned off in the middle of the installation operation – so plug in the charger. From path “menu – settings – developer options” enable USB debugging option on your smartphone.
Also, remember to use the one-click install method for flashing the latest version of TWRP recovery (compatible with Android 4.4 custom ROMs) only if you own the Sprint, Verizon, China or International models of the HTC One Max. The steps from below are compatible only with the same – else you will probably end up in bricking your handset.
