How To Update Galaxy S2 GT I9100G to Jelly Bean CM10
The Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100G is still a powerful smartphone with some decent specs and capabilities to offer. The only way in which you could make things even better is by flashing a custom ROM into its system. In this way you can update the OS and the features in the same time not to mention the other advantages that comes with such a firmware. There are many updates available for the S2 but the one that should arouse your interest is the Jelly Bean one. Therefore, I will be showing you in how to install the Android 4.1 based CyanogenMod 10 custom ROM on your Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100G.
But be aware that both, the Jelly Bean OS and CyanogenMod 10 aren’t yet official. There are no words coming from Samsung about a possible Android 4.1 update available for the I9100G handsets therefore this should be the perfect opportunity for you. On the other hand, CM10 is still in beta stage, so there might be several bugs and things that don’t work in the system. You will not be able to enjoy a stable version of the ROM, at least not until it is officially released by the CyanogenMod team.
Then, for being able to flash the firmware on your phone you will have to install a custom recovery image on it. Of course this will require root access (as well as the operation mentioned here), so for the suitable root guide check our tutorials. You should apply the guide depending on the version of the operating system, or on the ROM that runs on your phone, so be careful in what you choose. If you perform a wrong procedure, you can brick your beloved Galaxy.
Once you root the OS, the warranty will be void. The only way in which you can regain it is by making a downgrade to the stock ROM. Then, the root access will be revoked and the bootloader relocked. The same can be obtained if you apply an official update, but for this you will have to wait until Samsung will launch the Jelly Bean firmware. The warranty is the only negative aspect related to the operation described between these lines, so take your time and decide whether to go further or to stop here.
Backing up the data from your Galaxy S 2 is more than recommended as you will have to wipe it off before installing the CM10 custom ROM. Don’t worry though as there are numerous apps available for the backup process. The tools are free distributed and can be easily used for both backup and restore. You can save contacts, messages, text, call logs, market apps and so on; for suitable guides check our previous tutorials from where you can find all the details needed. If you need extra info, feel free to talk with us by using the comments area from below.
After the backup, you must ensure that you have access to a Windows running computer and to the phone’s USB cord. Then, you must deactivate the Firewall protection from your PC and the security tools (like antivirus) from your phone. Enable the USB debugging option from your S2 and charge its battery (or make sure it has at least 60% power left). Remember to root and install a custom recovery image, along with completing a backup before starting the steps and that’s all.
The present guide can be provided thanks to those of xda-developers so we have them to thanks. Be careful in what you do and don’t perform things by yourselves as you can damage the current ROM, or worst brick it.
