HTC releases the list of smart phones that will get the ICS update

After numerous rumors and leaks, it looks like HTC has finally decided to release a schedule and a list of the devices they will update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Although the Taiwanese manufacturer is a bit late with this list, it is still nice of them to finally specify which of their former high end or middle end devices will get to taste the latest and greatest OS from Google.

If we compare the list of devices HTC has brought forward we will see, albeit with a little bit of surprise, that it will update more smart phones than any other manufacturer to ICS. This is a big blow to the competition, especially to Samsung, who are known for releasing a great number of similar Android running smart phones. Another great bit of news is that the Android 4.0 ICS update has already arrived on some device in the EU, but so far it has been restricted to the two former flagship devices, the HTC Sensation and the HTC Sensation XE.

Judging by the devices present on this list we can almost surely conclude that all HTC smart phones running on Qualcomm S3 chipsets will get an ICS update eventually, but then again HTC may decide that some of they are not worth the trouble. There are still a few exceptions to this rule, and among them we can find the old timer HTC Desire HD, Desire S and Incredible S. These three devices are all powered by the Qualcomm S2 chipset, so there is still hope for other similar devices. On the other hand, old devices like the original Desire which only have the S1 chipset will not receive this update, officially at least.

Another very interesting fact is that the Android 4.0 ICS update HTC is seeing will bring the older devices to the level of the HTC One X or S. If you know your way around HTC’s Sense interface, you might be interested to know that the ICS update comes with Sense 3.6 instead of Sense 4.0 as featured on HTC’s One lineup. This is very strange as Sense 4.0 is much faster and consumes fewer resources than its older brother, but HTC specifically mentioned that they chose the Sense 3.6 software in order to keep the same feel and usability of the older models. This will certainly be a bit of a hiccup in the update process, as I am pretty much sure that most people out there would have preferred the newer, lighter version of Sense.
