Install AOSP Android 4.4 KitKat Firmware on Droid Razr HD (XT925 and XT926 models)
Android 4.4 KitKat is already out there, but unfortunately not all the Android based devices will receive the latest Android touch. I am talking about the outdated handsets that aren’t capable of running the stock Android 4.4 experience due to hardware limitations. The same is applying for the Motorola Droid Razr HD which will no longer receive OTA updates. Anyway, if you have the mentioned device and still want to test and enjoy the latest features that are available on Android system, then you surely want to install a custom ROM firmware on your phone.
If that’s your plan, then I will help you out; so, that’s why, during this step by step guide I will show you how to easily and safely update your Motorola Droid Razr HD (model numbers XT925 and XT926) to Android 4.4 KitKat OS and all by installing a new AOSP custom ROM software. The update procedure is not hard to apply, so you have nothing to worry about; but since this is an unofficial operation, for being able to avoid the unpleasant situations, such as bricking your Android device, you need to read all the lines from this tutorial.
As I have mentioned, this update isn’t official. Therefore, the AOSP Android 4.4 KitKat firmware isn’t coming from Motorola or from Google and it’s not an OTA release suitable with your Droid Razr HD model number XT925 or XT926. So, AOSP has been developed by third party devs and offered by the same. Basically we have to thanks those of xda-developers for the present tutorial as they are “responsible” for the same. Anyway, do note that this is only an unofficial port of Android 4.4, which means that you might find minor bugs or issues included on the software.
You shouldn’t worry, as AOSP Android 4.4 KitKat firmware has been optimized for the Motorola Droid Razr HD, so the update will smoothly run on your device. The best is that with this software you will be able to receive the latest Android features, apps and capabilities. Furthermore, with AOSP you will be able to get a custom UI, not the stock Android 4.4 one, extra features that cannot be found on the default KitKat system and you will also be able to enjoy a better Android experience, better web browsing experience, improved speeds, upgraded battery life and mainly better performances.
Considering the up mentioned info, it should be clear for you that this process can be applied only on some conditions. These conditions represent the pre requisites that must be completed before applying the steps from below. Now, for detailing these preparation tasks I will explain each process separately.
So, first we have the root access: you need to root your Motorola Droid Razr HD if you want to install the AOSP Android 4.4 KitKat firmware. Root access must be gained because an unofficial ROM can’t be flashed if there are security restrictions installed; so, root the system for unchaining your Droid Razr HD and for being able to update its OS with custom ROMs. But be careful when doing so as the warranty will get void; for restoring the same you will have to downgrade your smartphone to stock Android OS – the flash counter will be reset.
Then, on your device install a custom recovery image, like CWM or TWRP recovery. The custom recovery image will offer a user interface between your handset and its internal system. That’s why you should know that a custom recovery image can be flashed only on a rooted Droid Razr HD. Now, this interface will be used for installing the Android 4.4 based AOSP ROM on your device. This is also an unofficial procedure, so try not to mess things up – use only suitable tutorials that can be applied for your Razr HD model numbers XT925 and XT926.
Also, on the flashing process, for ensuring that the new firmware will run without problems, you need to wipe the system and clear the cache (I will show you how during the steps from below). Because of that a backup is recommended; without making the backup you will lose everything that’s saved on the internal storage memory of your smartphone. Also, I recommend you to save the current ROM via CWM recovery; if the AOSP firmware will be buggy or if you will not like the new Android 4.4 KitKat OS, then you will be able to restore the stock Android OS without following a guide similar with the present one.
On the other hand, we do have the general pre requisites, which are referring to the following aspects: a computer must be used and your Razr HD model number XT925 or XT926 must be near you. Since you need to connect your phone with the computer make sure that the USB cable is also there. Now, on both computer and handset deactivate the antivirus, antimalware and Firewall protection and on your device only plug in the charger if there is less than 60% power left. Then, from “menu -> settings -> developer options” check the USB debugging option. Finally, just remember that this tutorial is compatible only with Motorola Droid Razr HD XT925 and XT926, so apply the AOSP Android 4.4 KitKat ROM only if you own the mentioned Android based devices.

- You can get the Android 4.4 update file for your Droid Razr HD XT925 from here, while this page should be used for the XT926 users.
- Then, from here you should get the Google Apps package as the same is not included on the AOSP firmware.
- Save the files on desktop (on your computer) but don’t unzip the same.
