Install CM11 on Sony Xperia P and Update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat Firmware

Android 4.4 has been released last month for all the Nexus devices and until then only few other Android smartphones or tablets received the OTA KK update. The major Android 4.4 roll out will be coming next year during February and March, but unfortunately not all the handsets out there will receive the KitKat touch. Anyway, if you have the Sony Xperia P and want to try the latest Android OS without waiting for the official OTA to be released, this guide will teach you how to install Nightly CM11 custom ROM on your phone.

CM 11 (nightly build) is based on the latest version of KitKat, Android 4.4.2 software, so once this tutorial is being applied the mentioned firmware will be running on your Xperia P. As you might know, CM11 is the best custom ROM that is currently available for the Android system. This custom update brings important and useful features, apps and capabilities (both stock and extra ones – that cannot be found on the default variant of KK platform) for all the devices that are being compatible with this ported version of Android 4.4.2 OS – including Sony Xperia P of course.

But CM 11 isn’t an official Android update as the same has nothing to do with Google or Sony in our case. So, CM11, like any other version of CyanogenMod, represents a free aftermarket distribution of Android firmware, the software being developed and offered by third party devs. Since this is the nightly build of CM 11, if you choose to install the same on your Xperia P, then you will be able to enjoy a stable and smooth Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS.

As I have mentioned above, the CM11 custom ROM is coming with some important features and capabilities. Well, these apps can’t be received when dealing with an official update. Furthermore, by using these extra features you will be able to power up the performances of your Sony Xperia P, while enjoying the Android 4.4.2 KK OS, so isn’t that great? Actually, with CM 11 installed, you will be able to bump the Xperia P speeds, upgrade the phone’s battery life, apply and use a custom user interface (which has nothing to do with the pure Android one), access the internal system for removing in built programs and bloatware and lot more.

There are many advantages that come with this update, but I let you experience the same by yourselves. What I will be teaching you is how to easily and safely update your Sony Xperia P to Android 4.4.2 by using the CM11 custom ROM firmware. But in order to do so, first you will have to prepare your Android device for the flashing process that will shortly follow. Because of that I have detailed the pre requisites from below; check the things mentioned during the following list and apply the tasks from there.

  • Your Sony Xperia P must be rooted, or else the CM 11 firmware will not work as expected, or it will not work at all – so you won’t be able to update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat software.
  • Gain root access and then install a custom recovery image on your phone. I recommend you to use CWM or TWRP recovery as these are the best custom recovery images available for Android (TWRP represents the touch version of CWM recovery).
  • When completing these steps (mainly root) the warranty of your smartphone will get void. All the mentioned operations aren’t official so because of that you will lose the warranty – basically the binary flash counter will be increased, so for restoring the warranty you will have to reset the binary flash counter – you can achieve the same by downgrading to stock Android Jelly Bean OS or by waiting for the Android 4.4 OTA update.
  • The best will be to backup the Xperia P data – only what’s saved on the internal storage memory. You see, a wipe will be required and when wiping the data you will lose your contacts list, call logs, market apps, personal info and accounts and basically everything else.
  • So use suitable backup and restore apps from Google Play and also use the custom recovery image for making a Nandroid backup – in this way you can save your current firmware as if the CM 11 ROM will not be on your taste, you will have to restore the old software.
  • You need to have access to a computer or notebook while your phone and its USB cable will be required.
  • On both computer and smartphone you first have to deactivate the security protection because the antivirus and antimalware programs might interfere with the update process.
  • Then, only on your phone, from “menu – settings – developer options” you need to enable the USB debugging option because a connection between your computer and handset will have to be established.
  • Also, you need to charge your phone in case its battery status displays less than 50% power left; if your Xperia P gets turned off in the middle of the update procedure you will risk in bricking your phone.
  • The same will happen if you will flash CM11 Nightly on a different or similar Android device with the Sony Xperia P; this step by step guide is compatible only with the mentioned smartphone.

How to Install CM11Nightly on Sony Xperia P and Update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat Firmware

  2. You can get the nightly CM 11 firmware from here, while you can download the Google apps package from here.
  3. Don’t unzip these files, just place the same on desktop.
  4. Then, connect your Xperia P with the computer with the help of the USB cable.
  5. Up next, copy-paste the downloaded files from desktop on your phone’s SD card.
  6. Now remove the USB cord and turn off your device because the recovery mode must be entered.
  7. Learn how to boot into recovery mode by using our dedicated step by step guide.
  8. Then use the recovery mode menu and select “wipe data factory reset”, “wipe cache partition” and “wipe dalvick cache”.
  9. After that, return to main menu of recovery and choose “install zip from SD card”.
  10. Also, select “choose zip from SD card” and pick the CM11 Android 4.4.2 firmware file.
  11. Install the update on your Xperia P and repeat the process for flashing Google Apps too.
  12. In the end, from the main menu of recovery select “reboot system now”.

If your Sony Xperia P gets stuck in a boot loop:

  • You need to return to recovery mode.
  • From there you need to select “wipe data factory reset”.
  • Also choose “wipe cache partition”.
  • Return to main menu of recovery.
  • Select “reboot system now”.
  • Enjoy.

If you don’t like the CM11 custom ROM Android 4.4.2 firmware:

  • These steps can be applied only if you had made a Nandroid backup as recommended before.
  • So, go back to recovery mode.
  • From there select “backup / restore”.
  • Follow the on screen prompts.
  • In the end your Xperia P should run on the old and stable Android Jelly Bean firmware.

If you are experiencing any other issues, try to resolve the same by following our dedicated tutorial: “how to resolve most common Android problems”.

Good; you have finally completed our step by step guide. So congratulations, your Sony Xperia P is now running on Android 4.4.2 KitKat firmware. CM 11 custom ROM software has been installed so you should test the same; remember that this is the nightly release of CM11, which means that there might be minor bugs included, though those who have tested the software on the Xperia P declared that there is nothing wrong with this update.
