The HTC Wildfire S users can now update their phones with the Ice Cream Sandwich flavor as CyanogenMod 9 custom ROM is here. So, in this step by step guide we will be checking in how to install CM9 on your Android based smartphone; the operation can be completed easily, by following a few steps and of course by downloading and then flashing the ROM on your Wildfire S. You have it all explained and detailed here, so don’t hesitate and give it a try.
CyanogenMod is the most popular custom ROM among users worldwide due to the features and capabilities that are being included in the software. The CM team is developing updates suitable for many and different Android powered smartphones and tablets, updates which mostly are being based on the latest version of the Android platform. Therefore, the CM9 ROM will update your HTC Wildfire S with Ice Cream Sandwich. Of course, you will not get the classic ICS interface, or default capabilities as the ROM is coming with its own “appearance” (themes, backgrounds and so on) and features.
By flashing CM9 on your Wildfire S you will be able to power up its performances. We know that the S is a mid-range smartphone with regular to decent specs: 512 MB ROM, 512 MB RAM, 2 GB internal storage included, 5 MP camera, 600 MHz ARM 11 processor and the Gingerbread OS. Furthermore, HTC stated that the handset will not receive any more OS updates in the future, so the only way in which you can get a better firmware will be by installing a custom or beta ROM into its system. The best part is that with CyanogenMod 9 you can upgrade the Wildfire to ICS, leaving the already outdated Gingerbread away.
Once you apply this tutorial, the phone will be unchained, the system optimized and customized and opened for changes. You will gain more speed, the RAM memory will get better, the battery life will be improved, the theme manager will customize the appearances and the other features will power up the capabilities. For a better view of the same, here are some of the CM9 enhancements; read them and see if you are satisfied or not.
We are talking about a custom ROM, so the present update isn’t coming from HTC. That means you will have to previously root your Wildfire S in order to flash the firmware properly. Furthermore, a custom recovery image (we will use it for performing a wipe and for installing the update) should be installed on your device. Unfortunately, when you gain root access, the warranty will get void. You can restore it by applying an official OS (released by HTC), in your case by making a downgrade to the stock ROM, meaning that the root access will be revoked and the bootloader restored (the factory restrictions will once more be installed).
Another negative aspect that is linked with this operation is related to the data stored on your Wildfire S. During the procedure it might be wiped out or corrupted. For avoiding unpleasant situations, you should perform a backup. More info about this can be reached by searching through our previous posts (for backup guides) from where you can learn what apps you should use in order to make a full and safe backup. You can save contacts, messages, call logs, market apps, images, videos and more, so don’t think twice, just ensure that your personal info are in safe hands.
Up next, you must actually get things moving. And the first to start with are the preparation procedures. As you might know, a Windows running computer will be required as well as the phone’s USB cord. Then, on your computer and on your Wildfire S you must deactivate all the security tools because the tools can interfere with the process. Then, for being able to update the Wildfire it must be powered on during the whole operation. So, make sure that it has at least 60% of battery power remain, or else charge it first. On your handset enable the USB debugging option and remember that you have to root and install a custom recovery image on the same.
The next thing to do is to take care of the steps from below. The proper step by step guide will now begin, so read all carefully and do all as explained. Follow my directions for updating the Wildfire S and not for any other similar smartphone as you can brick its system. And try not to mess things up as the warranty is no longer in your hands.
How to Install CyanogenMod 9 on HTC Wildfire S
- For the first step, you should go here and download the CM9 file.
- Of course, save it to your computer.
- Then, connect the phone with the PC by using the USB cord.
- Just copy-paste the file downloaded before from the PC to your handset.
- Remove the USB cable.
- Reboot the device and try entering in recovery mode: press Volume Down key while powering on.
- From recovery menu, select: “wipe data factory reset” and “wipe cache partition” (this is why you need to do a backup).
- Then, from the same menu (return back with “+++go back+++”) select “install zip from sd card” and “choose zip from sd card”; just pick the file from step 4 and click “ok”.
- The installation process will now begin, don’t press anything, and just wait until it’s over.
- In the end select “+++go back+++” and “reboot system now”.
Take note that the CM9 for the HTC Wildfire is still in its first version of release, so if you find bugs in the system don’t worry, as the CyanogenMod team will take care of that as soon as a new variant of the ROM will be developed and launched. We will prompt you with the same so stay close. Also, share your thoughts with us and do tell us how things worked for you. If something wrong occurred we will do all that we can for resolving the issues.
