Install CyanogenMod (CM) 10.1 M1 Build ROM for Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 I535

CM10.1 Nightlties Android 4.2.2 available now

CyanogenMod 10.1 M1 build ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S3 Verizon model has been released and you can install it using this post. Read all the info listed and you should be able to flash all files at your first attempt.

The CM10.1 M1 build is based on the Android 4.2.1 and it is the most stable release to date of the CM 10.1 Nightlies. It packs numerous features and it is the best way for you to get closer to the Vanilla Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean ROM. In order to successfully install this new build of CyanogenMod 10.1 M1 ROM you need to prepare your device for the install process. Here’s what you need to know:

  • This article is destined to be used only by Verizon Samsung Galaxy S2 owners. Do not attempt to flash the files in this post on any other variant of Galaxy S3. The phone should be of model number I535.
  • The phone is required to be on an unlocked bootloader, rooted and running a custom Recovery image. Guides for all these on this page HERE.
  • Use the custom Recovery mode to create full backup of your current ROM. This will come in handy in case you cannot boot into normal mode.
  • You can choose to save a list of installed applications, backup SMS, Call Logs and APN internet Settings using the following tools for Android: SMS backup & restore | Call Logs backup & restore | APN Settings Backup & Restore | AppBack for Android application. Root access is required for all these apps.
  • Sync your Gmail account with the Contacts app. You can restore all contact phone numbers and details after you install the new ROM by entering the same Google Account.
  • Enable the USB Debugging option from the Android Developer Options menu. This will make sure that your device will be recognized by your PC when you will attempt to move the ROM and Gapps file to your device.
  • Note that we cannot be held responsible in case you brick your phone in the process.
  • Make sure that you backup all your important data before installing the new ROM.
  • Ask for extra help in comments.

NOTE: If your phone already runs a CM10.1 ROM then you should install the new one over it without applying the ‘factory reset’ action. However,  if you want a fresh install then you will have to wipe data and factory reset your device. That means that all data from the /system partition will be removed.

These were all the instructions that you had to follow before getting to the tutorial. Make sure that you don’t skip any of the steps that I’ve listed below.

How to flash the Official CM 10.1 M1 custom ROM on Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3:

  1. Download the CM10.1 M1 build from HERE. Save it on your PC and don’t unzio.
  2. Download the Google Apps zip file from HERE. This is the zip that contains all Google-based apps your SGS3 Verizon needs in order for you to get the whole Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean experience. Save the file on computer without extracting its contents.
  3. Connect the smartphone to computer via USB cable. Move the downloaded files on its internal SD card and after that you can disconnect it from PC.
  4. Power off the phone.
  5. Boot it into CWM Recovery mode. Press and hold ‘Volume Up’, ‘Home’ and ‘Power’ buttons and release them only when the custom Recovery mode appears.
  6. Use the ‘backup and restore’ option to create a full NANDROID backup of your current ROM. If you already have a backup then you can skip this step.
  7. Now, select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’ option and confirm.
  8. Select ‘install zip from sdcard’ and then ‘choose zip from sdcard’. Find the CM 10.1 M1 ROM zip and install it.
  9. When the CyanogenMod 10.1 ROM installs with success you need to select again ‘choose zip from sdcard’. Find the ‘Gapps’ zip and install it.
  10. Get back to the main CWM Recovery menu when the files are installed. Select ‘reboot system now’.
  11. Wait at least 4 minutes for the first boot process of the CM10.1 ROM to complete. When the home screen of the ROM appears you should enter your Google Account details and take control over your device once again.
  12. Test the new OS and tell us in comments which are its best components.

NOTE: In case the first boot process doesn’t complete after 10 minutes, then you will be forced to power off the device completely and after that you will have to repeat the entire tutorial starting with step 5. Make sure that you apply the actions listed under step 7.

For any extra questions please use the comments section below.

The CM10.1 M-build shouldn’t be the last ‘M’ release and we should get another one the next month. You can keep it updated using  the CyanogenMod Updates button in the ‘About Phone’ menu. However, that one will install a Nightly build of CM10.1 and it might not be very stable and it is recommended only for users who like to switch between ROMs frequently.
