Install Official CM 11 Android 4.4.2 Nightly for T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3

Official CyanogenMod 11 is now available for the LTE variant of the Galaxy Note 3 T-Mobile. Read this entire post and you should be able to complete all the instructions in no time without bricking your device.

CM 11 Nightly is based on the latest AOSP Android 4.4 KitKat build. It is a custom ROM built by the CM team and not an official release by Samsung not T-Mobile. You will get all the default stock features as well as some other elements created by the CyanogenMod team. More info about this custom ROM can be found at the CyanogenMod team web page here.

CM 11 Nightly is still in its early stages of development, which is why you should only install it in case you want to test run a KitKat custom ROM. Note that the battery life of your device might suffer, since the KitKat is a new OS and it might require more power to run smoothly.

Note that you cannot enable ART for CyanogenMod, yet. With future new builds we will surely be able to activate ART and make it work with Galaxy S3.

Before starting the installation of this new ROM you will first need to take a look at the preparation guide below:

  • Use this post only with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 T-Mobile.
    – do not attempt to update any other smartphones with the files that you will find in this post, as you will end up bricking the device.
  • The new custom ROM can be flashed in case your device is rooted and running the latest version of CWM or TWRP Recovery.
    – both CWM and TWRP should work with this guide if you have updated them to the latest build.
  • NANDROID Backuop for the ROM has to be applied before starting the installation of this new CM 11 Nightly.
    – this step is listed in the tutorial, so you shouldn’t skip it.
    > this will set a restore point for your device, one that you can use in case the new CM 11 ROM doesn’t boot correctly.
  • Apply the Factory Reset for your phone before installing the new ROM.
    – Factory Reset will delete all the data from your system partition, while leaving the external and internal storage just the way they were before.
    – Do not skip this step, as the new ROM will not boot correctly.
  • Backup data from installed applications, SMS text messages and APN Internet Settings using the following tools for Android:¬†Helium.
    – non-rooted devices will also work with this application.
  • Use the info here if you want to learn how to successfully backup data from Contacts.
  • Enable USB Debugging from Developer Options menu.
  • This is a post for advanced users, do not blame us in case something goes wrong and you brick the phone or lose any important data files.
  • Check the phone’s battery charge level and make sure that it is over 50%, so that the device won’t switch off while you’re flashing the new ROM.
  • In case you cannot install the ROM at the first attempt, then you can try again by making sure that you don’t skip any steps.

Now that you know all of the above you can continue to the next part of this post. This is not an official build released by Samsung nor by T-Mobile. Install the new ROM at your own risk. Use it only for testing purposes only.

How to flash CM 11 Nightly Android 4.4.2 ROM for Galaxy Note 3 T-Mobile:

  1. Download the ROM zip from here.
    – make sure to download the latest build available.
  2. Download Gapps for Android 4.4.2 ROMs from here.
  3. Connect the phone to your PC via USB Cable and then move both zip files to your device’s internal storage.
    – after the files are copied you can disconnect the Note 3 from computer.
    > do not unzip the transferred files.
  4. Power off your phone now and then boot it in custom Recovery Mode.
    – learn here how to boot custom Recovery for Samsung devices.
  5. First you need to create a full NANDROID ROM backup for the installed OS:
    – select ‘backup and restore’, then name the file and save it to your device’s internal / external storage.
  6. Next, apply the ‘factory reset’:
    – select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’, confirm.
  7. Now you can flash the brand new custom ROM:
    – select ‘install zip from sdcard’, then ‘choose zip from sdcard’.
    – find the CM 11 Nightly zip file and confirm the installation.
  8. After the ROM is installed you need to repeat step 7 and flash the Gapps zip too.
  9. When you manage to install all the new files, get back to the main custom Recovery screen.
  10. Reboot the phone in normal mode now.
    > the first boot process of CM 11 Nightly takes several minutes to load all the new files, which is why you should wait until the home screen appears.
  11. Enter your Google Account details and take control over your phone when it boots completely.
    – now you can finally start to test all the brand new features.

These were all the steps that you had to follow and now you’re free to do whatever you want with the UI of your device.

Note that in case the first boot process doesn’t complete at your first attempt, then you should try to repeat the entire guide. If you do decided to repeat the guide, then you will have to make sure not to skip any steps that I’ve listed — apply ‘factory reset’ along with ‘format /system’.

If you cannot flash the new ROM or you find it to have to many problems, then you can use the NANDROID ROM Backup file in order to restore your device to its previous OS. Ask for more help in comments in case you cannot complete the guide or restore the phone.

You can continue to update your smartphone with new CM 11 Nightly builds using the CyanogenMod Updates feature from Settings. Note that you can also set the tool to notify you when new builds are available.
