Motorola Moto E4 might not be the best deal if you are looking for a budget device, but it’s still one of the best affordable smartphones that runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS. And if you want to spice things up you can also choose to tweak this phone since a root solution had just been made available. However, since gaining root access on the Moto E4 is possible if a custom recovery image is used, today we will be checking on how to successfully install TWRP recovery on the already mentioned handset.
TWRP recovery is therefore a custom recovery image which will help you root the Motorola Moto E4. Now, a custom recovery image is a dedicated software that offers extended access towards the Android core system – unlike the stock recovery through which you can initiate only official processes such as clearing app data cache, making a hard reset or applying OTAs. Shortly, a custom recovery image can help you customize, optimize and personalize your Android device, if you want to improve its general performances.
So, after taking care of the following steps you will be able to use TWRP recovery for completing different other tweaks including: gaining root access, installing custom ROMs, MODs and kernels, flashing apps from other sources than Google Play, remove bloatware, make Nandroid backups for saving system files and so much more.
However, replacing the stock recovery image with TWRP recovery on your Motorola Moto E4 is not an official operation. Actually, this process is not backed up by Motorola and cannot be associated in any manner with your OEM or with Google. And that’s why the warranty of your device might get void if you choose to start the flashing operation that’s described during the following guidelines. Unfortunately, you cannot change this aspect since you are now ready to initiate your first tweaking process.
TWRP recovery is a third-party software developed by third party devs – in that respect we must thank those of xda-developers for this new tweaking opportunity. Anyway, the warranty is only a risk that must be assumed; if you stick to the steps from this guide you have nothing to worry about; your smartphone will remain safe and secured all the time.
Your personal data, info, accounts and files should be saved first. It’s unlikely to lose something while flashing TWRP recovery, but since we are discussing about personal info, the best is to be precautious. So, backup your Moto E4 and secure your contacts, call logs, texts, images, videos, audio files, market apps, internet settings, calendar info, saved passwords, IMEI / NVRAM data and more. Don’t worry, the backup can be quickly completed – you can use from different backup and restore solutions such as syncing your files with your Google account or downloading dedicated apps from Google Play.
After saving everything from your phone you should also check the power that’s left. If the battery level displayed is lower than 50% your Moto E4 might get turned off during the TWRP recovery installation process. So, plug in the charger if that’s required.
The steps from below will work only if your Moto E4 runs on an unlocked bootloader; if not, you should first unlock the bootloader and then return to this step by step guide.
Moreover, make sure you use the Snapdragon version of the Motorola Moto E4 because the TWRP recovery file from below is compatible only with this particular Moto E4 model. Try not to mess things up as in the end you can end up in soft bricking your Android based device.
A computer will be required for the installation process that’s explained below. On this computer you need to install Android SDK: learn how to flash Android SDK on Windows or how to set up ADB on MAC OS X / Linux. Additionally, on your computer, the Moto E4 drivers must be installed. And, on your phone the USB Debugging option must be checked, which can be done only if Developer Options are enabled – go to About Phone, tap repeatedly on Built Number and wait until the ‘you are a developer’ message is displayed; then, go to “menu – > settings – > developer options” and check the USB Debugging field.
