Flash Unofficial SliMKat Android 4.4.2 beta ROM for Galaxy S3 I9305

An Unofficial SlimKat Android 4.4.2 Beta build has now been made available for the Galaxy S3. Use this tutorial if you want to learn how to successfully update your smartphone.

This new custom ROM has been posted in an XDA thread here, so you can follow the link if you want to learn more about this release. Note that SlimKat is based on AOSP Android 4.4.2 and it is a smaller build when compared to CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android and AOKP. Before starting the installation process you should take a look at the guidelines below:

  •  Use this post only with the Samsung Galaxy S3 model number I9305 – Snapdragon Ss4 version.
    – do not attempt to update any other smartphone with the files that you’ll find in this post, as you will brick its firmware.
    – for custom KitKat ROMs for Galaxy S3 (Exynos 4 Quad) you need to take a look at its section here.
  • Your device has to be rooted and running the latest build of CWM Recovery image.
    – this post has been tested only with CWM Recovery.
  • In the tutorial you’ll find the NANDROID ROM Backup step, so you shouldn’t skip it.
    – this will create a full restore point for your smartphone, one that you can use in case the new ROM doesn’t boot in normal mode.
  • Also, you will need to apply a Factory Reset.
    – this will wipe all data from system partition, while leaving the internal and external parts unaffected.
    – do not skip this step when you reach it.
  • Backup data from installed applications and SMS text messages using Helium tool — link here.
  • Sync Contacts with your Gmail account.
    – guide here for those who don’t know how to do it.
  • Enable USB Debugging from Developer Options menu.
  • Make sure that your phone’s battery charge level is over 50%, so that the device won’t switch off in the middle of the updating process.
  • This post is for advanced users, so you shouldn’t blame us in case you brick the phone or lose any important data during installation.
  • Red the entire post and make sure not to skip any of the steps listed below.

Now that you know all of the above you can continue to the next part of this post in order to learn how to successfully update your device with a brand new KitKat custom ROM.

These were all the steps that you had to take in order to complete the installation of this new ROM. If you cannot complete the guide at your first attempt, then it would be best for you to retry the tutorial.

If you decide to repeat the guide, then you have to make sure that you won’t skip any steps and that you will make sure to apply Factory Reset. Besides Factory Reset it would be best for you to us the ‘Format /system’ option too.

If you don’t like how the new ROM works with your smartphone and you’ve created a NANDROID ROM Backup in step 6, then you can choose to restore your device to its previous state using the same CWM Recovery mode. For any other questions, use the comments field below.

Thanks for posting about the SlimKat rom for our phones. However I9305 version is actually a Exynos4 chip not a Snapdragon (at least the international version is) Please correct your article since it provides misleading information about what phone to install the ROM you link to. Thanks.
