Shortly after the CyanogenMod team released the CM9 RC1 milestone, they now have news about CM10, which will be based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Like you probably got used already with Android, if you want to stay updated, then you never have a very stable firmware. And while CM9 RC1 is very stable, it’s pretty clear that CyanogenMod 10 will come with a lot of bugs and lack of features, being first released as a nightly build.
CyanogenMod is the most popular Android custom ROM and is being used by millions around the world. Hearing about CM10 makes us very happy, considering that the CM team does an extraordinary work, sometimes even better than the smartphone makers. CyanogenMod is based on the Android AOSP, which is developer to be compatible with various devices and has a lot of features added for better functionality, customization and more features.
It seems like they don’t have to start from scratch with CyanogenMod 10, as they can merge the Jelly Bean sources with CM10 RC1, which is a very good news. This means we will see a stable version of CM10 pretty soon. The CyanogenMod team will start work on CM10 as soon as Google released the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean source code. Until then, their hands are tied.
Unfortunately there’s no CyanogenMod 10 release date, as the CM team never offers an ETA for their products. Fortunately, all devices that support ICS are able to support Jelly Bean too, which means the CyanogenMod team is not going to support CM9 for a long time. They will soon release a stable version and will work on fixing bugs on it, but that’s all. They will focus mostly on CM7 and CM10 and there’s no reason to be sad about it. Jelly Bean is much better than the ICS and while every ICS device supports it, then it means we’re going to get CM branded Jelly Beans soon.
If you’ve ever wondered why did they choose these version names, you have to know they are somehow related to the Android naming. While Android names their versions alphabetically ( alpha, beta, Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean and the rumored Key Lime Pie ).
CM7 is based on Gingerbread, which is the 7th letter in the alphabet, while CM9 is based on ICS ( 9th ) and CM10 on Jelly Bean ( 10th ).
