In the past few weeks we have seen plenty former flagships get the Android 4.0 ICS update, but I guess it is up to their manufacturers if they will receive the update or not. Even though LG has not specified if it will upgrade its LG Spectrum to the latest version of Android, hopes are high since its competition has already begun the updating spree. For now, the South Korean manufacturer has decided to release the Android 2.3.6 update for their Verizon flagship device.
If you do not know what all the fuss is about,, we should tell you that the LG Spectrum is on par with the Sony Xperia S and has been until a month ago one of the most powerful Android devices out there. Just like the Xperia S, the LG Spectrum for Verizon packs a Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon chipset, with two cores, each clocked at 1.5 GHz. This may have sounded as a greater feat some time ago, but the competition quickly caught up with the new Quad Core processors and even the newer Krait chipsets from Qualcomm. The other interesting aspect of the LG Spectrum was its 720 x 1280 pixels, 4.5 inches wide IPS LCD, which is still amongst the best screens you can find on the market.
In other words, the LG Spectrum had all the specs needed to become a best seller, but unfortunately things didn’t quite go on this road. Nevertheless, LG seems to have stuck by its flagship device on Verizon, and as such it has released a minor software update covered in the 2.3.6 version of Android Gingerbread.
This not so much awaited update brings with it some new fixes to the web browser, email and widgets on the phone, and it has also been listed as “coming soon” on LG’s official website. Thankfully, it seems like some users who have been brave enough to try updating their devices via the PC based Software Update Assistant have been able to do so for a couple of days. This means that the OTA version of the update shouldn’t be far behind.
If you happen to own an LG Spectrum, you might feel a little bit disappointed of the latest software update, but word has it that LG is working full time to get the Android 4.0 ICS update out for their very important Verizon device, so stay tuned for more news.
