Sony Xperia SP and Sony Xperia L are the less pricey alternatives to the company’s high-end smartphones, Xperia Z and Xperia Z, but in the same time keeping some of the Sony’s distinctive characteristics. The technical specifications of the new Sony models are above what the initial rumors were suggesting, the Japan-based company fitting interesting specs and a design similar to its flagship smartphone.
Sony Xperia SP is a mid-end smartphone equipped with a 4.6-inch display with 720p resolution, called Sony HD Reality Display, using Mobile Bravia Engine 2 technology.
The Sony Xperia SP is powered by a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960Pro CPU clocked at 1.7 GHz, but Sony somehow forgot to mention the amount of RAM. The Xperia SP comes with 8 GB of internal storage, but only 5.8 are available for the users, but it can be expanded using a microSD card of up to 32 GB.
The case of the Xperia SP follows the design language introduced by the Xperia Z, with aluminium edges, but it has a transparent band with LEDs in the low end of the device, which can be customized for notifications or music player.
The primary camera of the Sony Xperia SP has an 8 megapixel Exmor RS sensor with autofocus, face detection, HDR, smile detection, full HD video recording at 30 fps, and many other features available through the dedicated camera app. The secondary camera for video calls has a VGA sensor.
The smartphone measures 130,6 x 67,1 x 9,98 mm, has 155 grams and it will be available in white, black, and red.
On the other hand Sony Xperia L comes with modest specifications: 4.3-inch display with 854 x 480 pixels resolution and dual-core Qualcomm MSM8230 CPU at 1 GHz. Just like the Xperia SP, it has 8 GB of internal storage, but the primary camera, even though it has an 8 megapixel Exmor RS sensor, it can only record 720p videos. The front-facing camera is also a VGA sensor.
Sony Xperia L is 128.7 mm tall, 65 mm wide, and 9.7 mm thin, has 137 grams and it will also be available in three body colors: white, black and red.
Both Xperia SP and Xperia L come pre-loaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and it will probably receive the Android 4.2 update soon after the launch.
