Moto X Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update Now Available for Republic Wireless Users

Even though most Moto X models are rocking Android 4.4.2 for several months, the Republic Wireless variant didn’t receive KitKat until now. Fortunately, the hybrid calling carrier announced they are now pushing the Moto X Android 4.4.2 KitKat OTA update to users. I guess it’s better late than never.

Anyway, you will be dealing with a staged roll out, as Republic Wireless announced that only 2,000 random Moto X owners will be able to test the new firmware in the first instance. Why? Because they need to see how their Moto X variant behaves while running Android 4.4.2. Anyway, the carrier hopes that the new update will be made available for download for all Moto X owners by May 9th.

The Republic Wireless Moto X Android 4.4.2 KitKat update arrives with improved Google Now search and suggestions, updated Camera app with “touch to focus,” new Phone Dialer and Caller ID functionality, and other KitKat goodies such as transparent status and nav bars, white status bar icons, full screen album art in the lockscreen, immersive mode, color emoji support, cloud printing and more.

As soon as your Moto X is be ready to receive the Android 4.4.2 update you should receive a system update notification message. All you need to do is tap on the notification then follow the on-screen instructions. You may also want to check for the update manually under Settings > About phone > System updates > Check now.

Because we’re talking about an incremental update, the Moto X Android 4.4.2 update file might have a size of over 500 MB, therefore it’s recommended to download it using a stable WiFi connection in order to avoid data charges.

Are there any Republic Wireless Motorola Moto X owners readying this? Are you guys among the lucky 2,000? Please let us know in comments.

I got it. Not much change to how my RW Moto X works from before other than some of the new features. I especially love the limited phone access without having to unlock my device. Can’t wait to see what else is new that I find useful to my needs. One improvement that wasn’t made that was a problem before has to do with my phone locking. It would lock, I could see the lock screen and touch it to put my pin in but the screen would go black and stay black until I push the power button. A not annoying especially when my previous iPhone 4 didn’t do this.

  • I have republic wireless but didnt get the update. The article details are wrong on how to check for updates though. Its actually Settings>System Update>Update Motorola Software.

Didn’t get the update. 🙁 Can’t wait for KitKat! I have really liked my Republic Wireless phone (Moto X since the day it was released in November ’13) and the service but they sure seem to take their time with releasing new phones and services. That is my only frustration with them.

I joined RW on the first day that the Mo-X went on sale. I’ve not yet received KitKat. My problem with RW is that I can’t send/receive MMS reliably to/from my gf using Ting. Both carriers are on Sprint Network but don’t play well together; a deal breaker for me!

I just got the update (I got the Moto X two weeks after RW’s release). Seems like I’m among the 2000! 😀 The update looks great.
