Moto X Play Headed to Verizon as DROID MAXX 2, Verizon DROID Branded Back Cover Leaks

If you’re a Motorola fan from the US, we’re pretty sure you must have been disappointed by Motorola’s decision to not release the Moto X Play in the US market. However, the device could finally be headed to the US if a recent report from Phandroid is to be believed. It will allegedly be offered by Verizon Wireless as an exclusive device, under the DROID MAXX 2 branding. Alleged images of the rear covers for the DROID MAXX 2 have also been leaked, courtesy of HellomotoHK.

Apart from the Verizon DROID branded back cover and additional Verizon touches to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, the DROID MAXX 2 should be pretty much identical to the international Moto X Play. If you remember, the DROID MAXX’s main USP was its long lasting battery. Since the Moto X Play packs a generous 3,630mAh capacity battery, the DROID MAXX 2 should have no issues living up to the “MAXX” heritage.

According to reports, the Moto DROID MAXX 2 will be offered by Verizon Wireless for an attractive price of $300 off contract. Even though most buyers go for a contract in the US, Verizon has decided that it is going to do away with the contract system and start selling smartphones outright to buyers. The relatively low off contract price should make it quite enticing to buyers, especially those looking for a mid-range device with exceptional battery life and a near stock Android Lollipop user-interface. The rest of the specs aren’t too shabby either. The device comes with a 1080 x 1920 Full HD display with a pixel density of 403 PPI and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top. Powering the smartphone is Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 615 64-bit SoC with Adreno 405 graphics. The chipset is paired with 2GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB built-in storage. There is a microSD card slot as well, although there are chances the Verizon DROID MAXX 2 may not offer expandable storage. The 21MP rear camera is impressive too and comes with a dual tone LED flash. The smartphone also comes with P2i nanocoating that helps protect it against accidental liquid spills and light drizzle.

Based on the leaked rear covers for the Moto DROID MAXX 2, it appears that Verizon will offer at least two color options for the device – Lime and White. More color options could be offered as well, we’ll know for sure only when Verizon officially announces the device.

Verizon is also rumored to be working on the Droid Turbo 2 for release later this year. The Droid Turbo was one of the most impressive flagship devices launched last year, so we do have high expectations from its successor as well. The Droid Turbo will allegedly be based on the Moto X Style but could come with quite a few major hardware changes.
