The new HTC One M8 2014 has just been released, but the competition is tough on the high-end smartphone market and the Sony Xperia Z2 is one of its best competitors. In this article we’re going to compare the two smartphones and see which one is worth its price. As always, we’re going to be unbiased and compare them for what they can actually.
The new HTC One M8 2014 edition and the Sony Xperia Z2 have both been released recently and they are two of the most powerful smartphones right now. We also expect them to remain some of the best for the rest of 2014, because most companies have already released their flagship devices.
We’re going to compare the HTC One M8 and Xperia Z2’s hardware specs, software, features, camera, design, battery, display and basically whatever we can to find all the differences between them.
HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 – Design
The new HTC One M8 and the Sony Xperia Z2 have a similar size, the first measuring 5.76 x 2.78 x 0.37 inches, while the latter 5.78 x 2.89 x 0.32 inches, which means the One is slightly thicker, while the Z2 is taller and wider. They’re also similar in terms of weight and the Z2 weights just 3 grams more than the One (163 vs 160 g).
The HTC One is considered the most beautiful smartphone by most, but the Xperia Z2 is not an ugly one either. The One features two stereo speakers on its front, while the Z2 has a very clean front.
We do prefer the HTC One M8’s aspect more, but this is based on everyone’s taste.
When it comes to build quality, we don’t have anything to complain to both smartphones. They both look and feel premium, but the Xperia Z2 has an advantage, being water and dust-resistant.
We’re going to call this a tie, because the HTC One might look better, but the Xperia Z2 is water and dust-resistant, which gives it a pretty good advantage. As we said, we want to compare them for what they can do and not for what we like.
HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 – Display
Both the HTC One M8 and Xperia Z2 have great displays, but the latter features a slightly bigger one (5.2 vs 5 inches). Their displays are very similar and have the same screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels.
Like it was to be expected, the One has a better pixel density due to its smaller display (441 vs 424 PPI), but you definitely won’t notice any difference.
We consider this to be pretty clear. The bigger display wins, because they are both very similar. Also the Xperia Z2 is not much bigger due to its display, so we consider it to be a better choice.
HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 – Hardware
Their hardware is very similar and, as we’ve seen, 2014’s flagships have used the same processor, while only the RAM differs a bit. The Sony Xperia Z2 is the only smartphone released this year that comes with 3GB of RAM, while the One only has 2GB. The Z2’s RAM is also LPDDR3, while HTC used an old LPDDR2 module.
They both sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, clocked at 2.3 Ghz, so this is clearly a tie. The GPU is also identical, both featuring an Adreno 330, just like all the other flagships released in 2014.
Unfortunately there are not many differences between the recent smartphones, but the Z2 has an advantage with the extra gig of RAM and the newer technology used, so we’ll call it a winner.
HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 – Camera
This year the fight is mostly about the camera, because all manufacturers are using almost the same hardware, but they’ve been working hard on their cameras.
The Z2 comes with a 20.7 MP camera with a 1/2.3″ sensor size, that takes really high quality photos and is able to record 4K (3840×2160 pixels) videos.
The HTC One 2014 features two Ultrapixel cameras at 4 MP, with a 1.3″ sensor size and FUll HD (1920×1080 pixels) video recording.
Both smartphones take really good photos, but we were more impressed by the Sony Xperia Z2, because the image quality is slightly superior.
It’s interesting that HTC used two cameras on the back, but it still lags behind the Z2 when it comes to quality, so we’re going to call Sony a winner once again.
HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 – Battery
We’re very sad to see that HTC has only packed a 2600 mAh battery in the One M8, especially now when everyone is looking for a longer lasting smartphone. The Xperia Z2 features a 3200 mAh battery, which has a considerably larger capacity.
There isn’t much to be said here, because the two smartphones have similar hardware and displays, which means the battery usage shouldn’t be much different between them. This means the Xperia Z2 wins again.
HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2 – Conclusion
When we started writing this article, we didn’t expect to see the Sony Xperia Z2 win by far, but it seems like we were wrong.
Unfortunately HTC didn’t seem to focus on what matters most and they might lose the battle of the flagships once again this year.
The Xperia Z2 turned out to be better when it comes to hardware, display, camera, and battery. We considered the design to be a tie, because we love the HTC One’s design, but the Xperia Z2 is water and dust-resistant, which is a pretty big plus.
