Google has failed to unveil the next-gen Nexus 7 tablet at the I/O event in May, despite the rumors pointing the contrary. Since the Nexus 7 specs were still a mystery for all of us, the rumor mill has started to speculate about the hardware platform that will underpin the next-gen Google tablet. Well, not anymore as the next-gen Nexus 7 specs were revealed by a chat with an ASUS representative.
The guys at Android Authority got their hands on some screenshots of an “alleged chat between a customer and an Asus representative.” Well, whether you believe or not the respective ASUS rep has somehow revealed the next-gen Nexus 7 specs to the the customer who was chatting with.
What’s the story behind the new Nexus 7 specs leak. An customer was chatting with an unnamed ASUS representative showing interest in purchasing the ASUS K009, which, as you probably know, is the next-gen Nexus 7 tablet, co-developed by Google and the Taiwan-based company. The ASUS rep was more than happy to reveal the Nexus 7 release date, saying that the 7 incher will be launched in before the ending of Q2. As simple as that.
Moreover, the ASUS representative has also revealed the technical specifications of the next-gen Nexus 7 tablet. It looks like, just like the rumors hinted, the next-gen Nexus 7 will sport a 7-inch display with LED technology and a resolution of 1,980 x 1,200 pixels. According to the recent Nexus 7 specs leaks, ASUS will ditch the Tegra 3 chipset over a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 Quad Core CPU / Snapdragon APQ8064 CPU, most likely clocked at 1.7 GHz (the clock speed wasn’t mentioned in the conversation.
The Nexus 7 technical specs list also includes 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. Even though the ASUS rep didn’t mentioned about it, there might also be a 16 GB variant of the 7-inch tablet.
In terms of connectivity, the Nexus 7 will reportedly come with Wifi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, LTE / WCDMA / GSM support, and a NFC chip.
Compared to the previous generation, the new Nexus 7 will have a 5 megapixel camera mounted on the back, while the front-facing camera will sport a 1.2 megapixel sensor. The battery will reportedly be a 4,000 mAh unit, while the tablet will run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box.
But how did the customer knew about the ASUS K009 codename? Well I remind you that the ASUS K009 was spotted in the FCC logs and most of the tech publications have agreed that that is the next-gen Nexus 7. The chat with the ASUS rep is also confirming what the recent rumors have indicated, namely that the new Nexus 7 release date has been set for late June, when it will arrive synchronized with the debut of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
Why isn’t the new Nexus 7 coming pre-loaded with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie? Well, because Google won’t announce the new Android iteration sooner than October. Google will celebrate Android’s 5th birthday this October, and, as I know the Mountain View-based giant, it would probably want to mark this milestone with the debut of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie and Nexus 5.
