Sony Honami, the next-gen camera phone developed by the Japanese company that will reportedly aim at Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Zoom, is making the headlines these days. After we’ve seen the white model hitting the web a couple of days ago, today we get to look at new pictures of the Sony camera phone. There’s no doubt that in terms of design the Sony Honami is a reminiscent of the Xperia Z flagship, but it looks like the new smartphone is ditching the glossy glass back lid over a mate back cover.
Judging by the pictures posted by the guys at Xperia Blog, the Sony Xperia Honami might come with an aluminium case instead of the glass body that made the Xperia Z a popular smartphone. The leaked photos also reveal an alleged speaker grille in the low end of the smartphone, the big Power button that is already like a Sony trademark, and the metallic pins for the dock connector that are now integrated in the case.
The 3.5 mm audio jack of the Sony Xperia Honami was placed on the top end of the handset, while the right edge accommodates the microSD cards slot, covered by a lid, and a dedicated camera button.
Rumor has it that the Sony Xperia Honami camera phone will be launched on the market in an attempt to revive the CyberShot brand which was pretty popular back in the times when the Japanese company was still co-developing phones with Ericsson.
Even though sources say that the Xperia Honami is Sony’s response to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, the two devices seem pretty different. While the Samsung smartphone packs a 4.3-inch display with 540 x 960 resolution, 1.5 GB of RAM, a dual-core 1.5 GHz Pega-Dual +XMM6262 CPU, plus a 16 megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom, the technical specifications of the Sony Xperia Honami recommend it as a high-end smartphone.
The rumor mill speculates that the camera phone developed by the creators of the Xperia brand will sport a 20 megapixel camera (there’s no word about optical zoom) and that it will be powered by the mighty Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset with quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU. Sources also say that the Xperia Honami will borrow the 5-inch full HD display of the Xperia Z and that it will come with 2 GB of RAM.
While the leaked photos have let us know that the handset will come with a microSD card slot, the reports are indicating that the terminal might come with 16 GB of internal storage.
So far, it’s been a pretty busy year for Sony, as the company already launched to powerful high-end smartphones: the Xperia Z in January at CES 2013 and its first phablet, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra (with a huge 6.44-inch full HD display). Well, the Asian smartphone manufacturer seems ready to announce another great Android-powered handset, which might also mark the revive of the CyberShot brand.
