Root Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on Android 4.4.2 KitKat

The Galaxy Note 2 device has been recently updated to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, now you can use this tutorial in order to learn how to successfully root this particular firmware.

Rooting your device is not that hard, but you should only do it in case you’re planning on customizing its ROM or flashing any new custom Recoveries or kernels.

Root for Galaxy Note 2 has been achieved using Chainfire’s CF-Auto-Root tool. Before starting the rooting process it would be best for you to take a look at the preparation info below. It will help you successfully flash the rooting files at the first attempt, so here’s what you need to know:

  • use this guide only with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 device model number N7100.
    – don’t try to root any other smartphones or tablets with the files that you find in this post.
  • install Samsung USB Drivers for your computer.
  • disable the Samsung KIES software if it is running on your computer.
  • disable any antivirus program.
  • apps like KIES and antiviruses will block the ODIN tool, the app that we will use to root your device.
    – also, KIES has to be uninstalled completely, so that it wont remove root after you achieve it.
  • enable USB Debugging from Developer Options menu.
    – if Developer Options doesn’t show up in Settings, then you have to enable that first.
    – info here on how to enable USB Debugging for Samsung devices.
  • check your phone’s battery charge level and make sure that it is over 50%, so that the phone won’t switch off in the middle of the rooting process.
  • the warranty of your phone will be revoked after achieving root.
  • read the entire post and don’t skip any steps.
  • this tutorial should be used only by advanced Android users, so you shouldn’t attempt to root your phone in case you don’t know what you’re doing.
  • note that in case root isn’t completed at the first attempt, then you will have to repeat the guide.

Now that you know all of the above you can continue to the next part of this article.

Remember that root will revoke your device’s warranty and if you want to restore it, then you will be forced to re-install a stock Android OS firmware.

How to root Android 4.4.2 KitKat for Galaxy Note 2 N7100:

  1. Download the CF Auto Root zip from here.
  2. Extract the zip contents and save the files on your computer.
  3. Download ODIN 3.09 from here.
    – extract the zip files, save all files in a single folder on your PC.
  4. Power off your Galaxy Note 2 device.
  5. Next, boot the phone in Android Download Mode.
    – if you can’t boot recovery then you can use the info here and learn.
  6. Launch ODIN 3.09 executable on your PC.
  7. Now take the USB cable and connect your device to your PC.
    – wait for ODIN to confirm that the phone was recognized, then you can continue to the next step.
    – if the NOTE 2 isn’t detected by ODIN, then you should re-install the Samsung USB Drivers and repeat the guide. Drivers download link is listed above in the preparation info.
  8. If everything is set, then you should go back to ODIN and click the AP button.
  9. Load the CF-Auto-Root-t03g-t03gxx-gtn7100.tar.md5 file, it’s the file extracted in step 2.
    – make sure that Re-Partition is disabled.
    – don’t edit other default ODIN Settings.
  10. When you’re ready for the root to begin you simply need to press the START button.
    – don’t press any buttons until the root is achieved.
  11. When Root is complete you will see the PASS alert shown by ODIN and the device will reboot.
    – disconnect the phone from PC when the Samsung boot animation screen loads.
  12. Log into your phone’s home screen when it appears.

These were all the steps that you had to take in order to complete the root process of your Galaxy Note 2.

If the device shows the ‘SuperSU has stopped’ error, then you will need to download and install the latest SuperSU APK. Get it from here.

Launch SuperSU app on your phone and after that you should update the binary, then allow SuperSU to disable KNOX  security. Reboot the phone and then everything should work smoothly.

If the phone doesn’t boot in normal mode after root is achieved, then you should apply a Factory Reset. This process will wipe the system partition in the process so you will lose installed apps, SMS, etc. No harm will be done to the internal storage. Here’s how to apply factory reset:

  • power off the phone completely.
  • boot the device in Recovery Mode.
    – if you can’t boot Recovery, then you should follow this post.
  • select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’ option.
  • confirm process.
  • reboot the smartphone when the factory reset is complete.

Now you have to wait for the device to boot in normal mode. Enter your Google Account info and take control over your device once again. If you have any other questions, then you should use the comments field below.
