How to Root Xiaomi Redmi 5A

Xiaomi Redmi 5A is running on Android Nougat and will probably receive the latest Android Oreo software. However, since a mid-range processor is powering the system, you might experience lags and hangs from time to time. If you want to avoid such situations and if you want to ensure a smoother Android firmware even when testing games and complex apps, you should first apply a few tweaks. And, gaining root access is the most important tweak that should be performed on your Xiaomi Redmi 5A.

Gain root access is a dedicated operation through which you will remove default / factory restrictions. So, in this case the goal is to obtain a system that can be easily customizable. Only on such system you can upgrade general performance for bumping speeds and improve battery life. In term of customizations and optimizations, once root is enabled you can start different operations including: removing bloatware and start-up programs, adding features that cannot be accessed on the default Android platform, installing root-only tools, downloading apps from other sourced than Google Play, installing custom MODs and kernels, updating with custom ROMs such as Lineage OS, AOKP or Paranoid Android, overclocking or undervolting CPU frequencies and so much more.

But, gaining root access is not an official operation – your OEM is not supporting the removal process, so you cannot remove built-in restrictions without assuming certain risks. Well, in that matter, you are going to lose your phone’s warranty if you will choose to apply this tweak. However, the warranty can be afterwards restored but only in certain situations – you can restore the warranty flag if you will reinstall the Android firmware (in that case the root access will be revoked and the Android system restored back to its initial state).

For the root operation you will need to apply some other additional operations. Thus, before applying the guidelines explained below you should unlock the bootloader of your Android based device. Afterwards, a custom recovery image must be installed on your phone – just check our tutorial and learn how to install TWRP recovery on your Xiaomi Redmi 5A.

Backup your Xiaomi Redmi 5A before ensuring root. It’s important to save your personal files, because while root is achieved your data can get corrupted or even wiped out (a hard reset might be required for example). So, a backup operation can help you save everything that wasn’t there from day one. I’m talking about contacts, call logs, texts, images, videos, audio files, market apps, internet settings, calendar info, EFS folder, IMEI / NVRAM data and so on. A general backup can be applied in different ways – I recommend you to sync your files with your Google Account, or to use built-in cloud storage platforms; another way in which you can easily save files is by using already tested backup and restore apps from Google Play.

A computer is needed for this operation. On this computer you will have to download the required root exploit. Your Xiaomi Redmi 5A and its USB cable will be also used during the root process. On your phone you have to gain Developer Options which can be done by tapping repeatedly on Built Number (under About Phone) until the ‘you are a developer’ prompt shows up. Next, from Developer Options (you can access this field by going to Menu and Settings) you have to check the USB Debugging feature.

Apply the steps explained below only if you own the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. Remember to unlock the bootloader and install TWRP recovery first if you want to successfully root your device. Also, check the power that’s left on your handset. In case this power is lower than 50% you need to charge your phone before doing anything else – when the power is low your handset can get turned off in the middle of the root process situation during which soft related problems might be experienced.
