After the some rumors surfaced about two weeks ago talking about the new Mega line-up, Samsung officially unveiled it’s new family of gigantic Android smartphones. The two new smartphones unveiled today, Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3 are designed for the users who prefer huge displays, but, in the same time they are not meant to cannibalize the sales of the Galaxy Note family, because the Mega devices have mid-range specs.
Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 comes with a 6.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels, while the processing tasks are fulfilled by an Exynos 5250 chipset, a unit based on a dual-core ARM Cortex A15 CPU clocked at 1.7 GHz, and a Mali-T604 GPU.
The Galaxy Mega 6.3 technical specs list also includes 1.5 GB of RAM, 8 or 16 GB of internal storage (expandable using microSD cards), 8 megapixel camera, a front-facing 1.9 megapixel sensor, NFC and an infrared module that takes over remotecontrol’s role. The connectivity features include LTE support, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and microUSB 2.0.
The new device measures 167.6 x 88 x 8 mm and weighs 199 grams, the body case hiding a 3,200 mAh battery. Galaxy Mega 6.3 will run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and it will be accompanied by TouchWiz features like Split Screen and Air View.
The second model, Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 sports a 5.8-inch display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. The technical specifications are a bit more modest than the ones of the Mega 6.3, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 featuring a dual-core 1.4 GHz, 1.5 GB of RAM, and only 8 GB of internal storage, of course, expandable using microSD cards.
Compared to its bigger brother, Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 lost the 4G LTE connectivity and WiFi 802.11 ac, but it will also be available in a dual SIM variant. The terminal is sized 162.6 x 82.4 x 9 mm, has a weight of 182 grams, and it will pack a 2,600 mAh battery.
The two members of the Mega tribe will become available for purchase as of May, Russia and Europe being the first regions to get them on the stores shelves. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3 prices have not been disclosed.
