The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been officially announced on May 3rd and we will be able to first get out hands on it as of May 29th, 2012. But thanks to Samsung, we’ve been able to get our hands on the device to test it and do some benchmarks, so we know exactly what we are talking about. For the moment, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the most powerful smart phone, packing the ultimate high-end hardware.
Since Samsung released the Galaxy S, the biggest fight has been between the iPhone and Samsung’s flagship device. We’ve seen the Galaxy S vs iPhone 4 and Galaxy S2 vs iphone 4S and now the time has come for another fight: Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5.
Unfortunately we can’t be sure what Apple’s new iPhone 5 will feature, but we can at least speculate what it will come with. The iPhone is most probably going to be released in October, this year, and will become available world wide by November.
The Galaxy S3 i9300 is lightning fast and it sports the best processor out there, so we are pretty sure that Apple will not use a better one for the iPhone 5. Samsung uses a quad-core Exynos 4 clocked at 1.4Ghz which makes it the fastest smart phone in the world. Currently there isn’t any processor able to compete with Samsung’s Exynos 4 and there won’t be any until the iPhone 5 gets released. So if Apple had used the same one, we could call it a tie, but most probably they will still use a dual-core one due to costs and battery lifetime savings.
The iPhone 4S features only 512MB of RAM, while the Galaxy S3 i9300 comes with 1GB. The only smart phone that features more than 1GB of RAM is LG’s Optimus LTE2, which sports double the RAM available on Samsung’s flagship device. Our guess is that Apple will match Samsung’s Galaxy S3 RAM by doubling it to 1GB, so we can call it a tie once more.
One of the biggest complaints coming from the iPhone users is the small display. Every iPhone has come with a 3.5-inch display and many iPhone users said they won’t buy the new iPhone 5 if Apple doesn’t increase the display size. And most rumors say they will probably use a 4-inch retina display. If they do, the new iPhone 5 will be bigger and probably heavier, though it’s thickness will be definitely reduced. The size shouldn’t be very noticeable and we consider it’s a win for Apple, because most people prefer smaller smartphones. And considering that the Galaxy S is pretty bulky, with it’s 4.8-inch display, Apple might win the ones who don’t like big smart phones.
Speaking about the display quality, we will probably see the same discrepancies as wee see today in the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S2. While the Galaxy S3 uses a Super Amoled HD display with wonderful colors and it also have a great PPI ( 306 ), but even the iPhone 4S has a higher PPI ( 330 ). Apple will probably stick with their amazing pixel density and increase it more in the new iPhone 5, while still using a LED-backlit IPS TFT. This means the Galaxy S3 i9300 display will be much brighter than the one present on Apple’s iPhone 5, but the retina display will be much sharper.
The Galaxy S3 comes with Google’s latest Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a very fast and easy to use operating system. It’s also much more customizable than the iOS, though it comes with more bugs and problems than the iOS. The new iPhone 5 will probably come an all-new iOS 6, which will bring more features, better customization and an improved UI. But unfortunately it won’t be possible to jailbreak the iPhone 5 running iOS 6 anymore, according to developers, so it will be a really big downside for many users. So the Galaxy S3 will be better for those who want to customize their smart phone like they want, while the iPhone 5 will be preferred by the ones who prefer a more stable smart phone.
Samsung has used a 8MP camera in their Galaxy S3, but it takes photos much faster, having a very low lag shutter. Apple will probably use the same camera in their new iPhone 5, so we can call it a tie again. Samsung has used a 1.9MP frontal camera, which is able to shoot 720p videos, but we don’t believe that Apple is going to do the same thing, so we can call it a win for the S3.
Both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 will come with 16Gb, 32GB and 64GB internal memory, but the S3’s memory can be expanded by up to 32GB with a microSD card, while the iPhone doesn’t feature a card slot. And the Galaxy S3 has one more advantage: it comes with 50GB of extra storage on Dropbox.
Apple will probably use a 1,600 – 1,700 mAh, while the Galaxy S3 i9300 sports a 2,100 mAh one. Samsung’s 4.8-inch display and quad-core processor use a lot of battery, but it will still last longer than Apple’s. Hopefully they will manage ti fix the current battery issues present in the iPhone 4S, which doesn’t have a very long lifetime, but still we believe it will not be able to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S3. One more downside for the iPhone 5 is that it will not come with a removable battery.
In terms of design, the Galaxy S3 i9300 has been considered a failure, though we don’t know how the iPhone 5 will look like. But considering Apple’s design guidelines, we are pretty sure the new iPhone 5 will have a very good design and I would really declare Apple a winner. It also features an unibody design, which makes it feel more resistant.
In conclusion, it’s hard to declare the absolute winner and it depends very much on your needs. If you want a smaller and more stable smart phone, then you should wait for the iPhone 5. But if you want a highly customizable one, with a wonderful and big display, go for the Samsung Galaxy S3.
