Samsung Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge Rumored to Offer Water Resistance and MicroSD Card Slots

After revealing some key features of LG’s upcoming flagship smartphone the G5, VentureBeat has come up with a new report detailing the features of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge flagship smartphones.

According to their sources, both the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge will come with microSD card support up to 200GB and offer IP67 dust and water resistance. This definitely is great news for all those who were turned off by the lack of memory expansion on 2015 flagship Galaxy smartphones. The return of water resistance is welcome too, but we don’t think most users would really care about it too much.

As far as display goes, the report claims the regular Galaxy S7 with a flat display will retain the same 5.1-inch size of the Galaxy S6. The Galaxy S7 Edge on the other hand, will come with a 5.5-inch dual curved edge display. In terms of resolution, both devices will retain the 1440 x 2560 Quad HD resolution. An interesting new addition is said to “always-on display (AOD)” function. Apparently users will be able to enable a glanceable screen to show some content on the screen while consuming just one per cent battery per hour. Battery life in general is expected to be significantly better than the 2015 models as the report claims Samsung will equip larger batteries inside this time. The regular Galaxy S7 is said to pack a 3000mAh capacity battery, while the Galaxy S7 Edge will include a 3600mAh capacity battery. Wireless charging will continue to be offered as well.

Under the hood, the Galaxy S7 duo will be powered by the Exynos 8 Octa 8890 SoC with four high-performance cores clocked at 2.3GHz and four power-efficient cores clocked at 1.6GHz. Some markets will be getting a Snapdragon 820 powered variant, such as the US and China. All models will reportedly include 4GB of RAM and come in two storage variants – 32GB and 64GB. The 128GB variant is not likely to be offered in most markets, although the report does say that it could be offered in select channels.

It also confirms that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will be equipped with a 12 megapixel rear camera, lower than 16 megapixel resolution offered by the 2015 Samsung flagship smartphones. Although the sensor size hasn’t been confirmed by the VentureBeat report, it is most likely going to be of the 1/2″ type, larger than most sensors found on smartphones these days. Along with a large sensor size, the camera could feature an f/1.7 aperture lens, which might result in exceptionally good low-light performance. Also, unlike the Galaxy S6, the new models won’t come with a camera hump at the back, which is a very positive news as well. On the front, the 5 megapixel selfie shooter from the previous generation is likely to be retained.
