Samsung and AT&T have finally taken the wraps off the latest “Active” Galaxy flagship, the new Galaxy S8 Active. As revealed by leaks earlier, the Galaxy S8 Active does not feature an Infinity Display like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Instead, the smartphone comes with a 5.8-inch flat Super AMOLED display with 1440 x 2960 Quad HD+ resolution and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. It is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top.
Another major difference between the Galaxy S8 Active and its slightly older siblings is the build. While the Galaxy S8 duo features a glass and metal sandwich design, the Galaxy S8 only features a metal frame and a polycarbonate back. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core 64-bit SoC, with the Adreno 540 GPU taking care of the graphics processing. In the memory department, it is equipped with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 flash storage. There is a microSD card slot as well, allowing users to further expand the storage by up to 2TB.
There are no changes to the cameras. Like its siblings, the Galaxy S8 Active sports a 12MP resolution rear camera with Dual Pixel autofocus technology and a bright f/1.7 aperture lens. Selfies are taken care of by an autofocus 8MP snapper paired with an f/1.7 aperture lens. The fingerprint scanner is placed at the back, right beside the 12MP rear camera. It also includes an iris scanner, barometer, accelerometer, Gyro sensor, Geomagnetic sensor, hall sensor, heart rate sensor, RGB light sensor, pressure sensor, and a proximity sensor.
Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 802.11 ac dual-band with VHT80 MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS with GLONASS, NFC, MST, USB Type-C, and LTE Cat.16 (up to 1 Gbps download speeds). Keeping the lights on is a 4000mAh capacity battery, so battery life should be superior to even the Galaxy S8+.
Apart from being IP68 certified for dust and water resistance, the Galaxy S8 Active comes with military-grade MIL-STD-810G certification for shock, shatter, water, dust, and pressure resistance. Available in Meteor Gray and Titanium Gold colors, the Galaxy S8 Active will be sold exclusively by AT&T for a “limited time”. Pre-orders begin on April 9th while sales are slated to commence on August 11. AT&T subscribers can get the smartphone for free on the AT&T Next Plan, wherein you will need to pay $28.34 monthly for 30 months. To go with your Galaxy S8 Active, you get the option of purchasing a Gear S2 for $1 or a Gear S3 for $50 with a 2-year plan. If you have an eligible smartphone for turn in, AT&T will give you up to $200 in credits. Alternatively, you can save $500 on a Samsung TV if you add a DirectTV connection after getting the Galaxy S8 Active.
