It seems that, besides the freshly launched Sony Xperia Z Ultra (the 6.44-inch phablet), Sony has even more surprises for us. The rumor mill is talking about a Sony camera phone, unofficially dubbed Xperia Honami i1. It’s not actually an unofficial name, but rather a codename used for the smartphone internally, thus we are expecting it to go on sale under a different name. Now we heave a leaked picture of the Sony Xperia Honami i1, and the confirmation that the Japan-based company is readying a camera phone that aims at Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom’s market share.
There were a lot of rumors saying that Sony seeks to revive the Cybershot brand that was very popular in the times when the Japanese company was still making smartphones with Ericsson. It was also rumored that the Walkman brand will also be revived, but this a story for another day.
A Brazilian website somehow managed to take a picture of the Sony Xperia Honami i1 and the smartphone is posing next to the new Xperia Z Ultra and the Xperia ZQ (the Xperia ZL variant for the Brazilian market). Even though the leaked picture doesn’t reveal any details regarding the hardware platform of the Sony Xperia Honami i1, at least is giving us some clues about how the new camera phone will look like. As you can see in the picture above, the Honami i1 is borrowing the design language introduced earlier this year by the Xperia Z. But will it also be water and dust proof?
The rumor mill speculates that the Sony Xperia Honami i1 will sport a 5-inch display with full HD resolution and that it will be underpinned by the powerful Snapdragon 800 chipset (which recently made it under the hood of the Xperia Z Ultra). The technical specs list of the Sony camera phone also includes 2 GB of RAM but the most interesting feature of the Honami i1 will definitely be it’s 20 megapixel camera.
Reports are indicating that the 20 megapixel camera mounted on the back of the Sony Xperia Honami i1 will come with an Exmor RS sensor, Cybershot technolgy, dual LED flash, Xenon flash, plus BIONZ mobile processing.
The Sony Xperia Honami i1 will definitely be one of the overachievers of the smartphone market in 2013 and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom will be its main rival. The latter one sports a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, has a dual-core 1.5 GHz Cortex A9-based GPU, 1.5 GB of RAM, and a 16 megapixel camera with autofocus, Xenon flash, 1/2.33” sensor size, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, 10x optical zoom (24-240mm), optical image stabilization, HDR, and panorama.
Even though the technical specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom are way below what was reported for the Sony Xperia Honami i1, the sensor of the Samsung’s camera phone (which is the selling point of the two devices) will most like be able to rival Honami i1’s 20 megapixel Exmor RS sensor.
The question is: Sony Xperia Honami i1 or Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom? Please feel free to comment in the special section below.
