While LG launched a plethora of devices in the first two months of 2013, Sony has unveiled only two smartphones. However, it seems that the Japanese company is preparing to release another one of its products namely the Xperia L.
According to the latest reports, Sony is already working on the new Xperia L, but if the leaked specs are accurate then the handset will be rather boring than innovative. Previous rumors said that the Sony Xperia L would be sporting a 4-inch screen, but now it seems that the smartphone will come with a 4.3-inch display, which is a good thing but not entirely as it looks like the 854 x 480 pixel resolution is almost set in stone. A smartphone with that resolution can’t be appealing to anyone even if the screen is that big. But there is more, the Sony Xperia L will be powered by a dual-core 1GHz CPU (we don’t know the branding, but it is probable that the processor will be the Snapdragon S4 PLus). THe device will also boast an Adreno 305 GPU and 8GB of on-board storage. As you can see, all the specs would be exiting only for the individual who don’t have the necessary money to buy a proper high-end phone.
The battery of the Sony Xperia L will be a 1700 mAh one, which is slightly bigger than the battery of the original Samsung Galaxy S (smartphone that was launched back in 2010). Even though the smartphone is probably meant to be a mid-range handset which will hit the emerging markets, the hardware is pretty poor. The only things that I like about the handheld is the fact that it will come with an 8 megapixel camera featuring an Exmor RS sensor, and it will run Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. This iteration of Google’s operating system is almost common these days, but it still an up-to-date OS, sort of.
In other words, the Xperia L will be a slightly improved Xperia J. What’s interesting is that Sony uses the letters in the alphabet for branding its devices. It’s actually logical as L is two letters after J. The naming system features the entry-level phones named after letters at the beginning of the alphabet and the high-enders are named after the last, hence the Xperia Z. The thing is that Z is the last letter, so I wonder how will the next Sony flagship smartphone be branded.
But enough about that because we have other important things to talk about. For instance, the dimensions of the Sony Xperia L are also known. According to the rumors, the device will measure 128.7 x 65 x 9.7 mm. This means that the Xperia L will be 1 mm thinner that the 4.3-inch Xperia S, which was released last year.
Unfortunately, there are no details about the pricing or the release date. However, we expect that the Xperia L will be announced along with the Xperia SP in the following weeks.
