As of today the Sony Xperia SP is now available in India. It’s pretty clear that the company wanted to launch a mid-range device too, after the release of its high-end smartphones, the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL. The Xperia SP was announced a couple of weeks ago and it seems like an interesting handset for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money on a flagship.
The Sony Xperia SP comes with a 4.6-inch TFT LCD screen that has a pixel resolution of 1280 x 720. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus dual-core CPU clocked at 1.7 GHz, and an Adreno 320 GPU. It also includes 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of on-board storage space, which can be further expanded via microSD card, an 8 MP rear-facing camera and a 0.3 MP VGA front one. As for the battery, the Sony Xperia SP sports 2370 mAh one. Also, the device comes running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which even though it’s not the latest version of Google’s OS, it does include some nice features.
It’s obvious that the Xperia SP has some pretty awesome specs for a mid-range. However, the price is also pretty high and the device is sold in India for Rs 27, 490 (around $518). Of course, isn’t that expensive comparing to other mid-range handsets manufactured by other phone makers, but it will be rather hard to sell as former flagships such as the Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X had their prices cut due to their successor’s arrival. If we think about it, the Sony Xperia SP includes hardware that is not that far away from the flagship smartphones of 2012, so it’s worth buying at this price.
There is another advantage that comes with the Sony Xperia SP as the people who will buy it will have free access to Sony’s Music application for six months. The application provides music streaming and a huge database of more than 15 lakh songs. Also, the Xperia XP owners will have access to the Sony LIV video streaming application.
The device will be available for purchase in retails stores from mid-April in both color versions, namely white and black.
Are you buying the Xperia SP or you prefer the Galaxy S4, which will released on April 25.
