The Japan-based phone maker has announced  via a post on their official blog that the Android 4.4.2 KitKat OTA update is now rolling out for three of their high-end smartphones launched in 2013. The latest Android firmware is now available for download for the owners of Sony Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, and Xperia Z Ultra.

Besides the usual KitKat goodies such as transparent status and nav bars, white icons in the status bar, full screen album and movie art in the lock screen, cloud printing, or emjoi support, the new firmware update also arrives with Sony-specific improvements. The Japanese company says that their media apps (Walkman, Album and Movies, and cloud integration) were updated to provide better user experience. The aforementioned blog post also notes that the PlayMemories integration got better after the new software update.

Sony also performed changes and improvements to their native app portfolio. Even though the blog post doesn’t mention what particular changes have been performed, it says that the Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, TrackID TV, Sony Select, and Smart Social Camera apps will now bring an enhanced user experience.

Besides the UI changes brought by KitKat itself, Sony also added their touch to the interface of the new firmware. For example, you will be able to customize your smartphone by downloading Xperia Themes UI packs from Sony Select, or enjoy launch animations and live wallpapers from PlayStation 4.

The unlocked Sony Xperia Z1 Compact terminals will be the first to receive the new software update, but even so, we will be dealing with a staged roll out, which means that some of you might not be able to download and install Android 4.4.2 on your smartphones right away. If you didn’t receive the system update notification, it’s also worth checking for the software manually. In order to do so you must head to Settings > About phone > System update > Check for updates.

In case you own one of Sony’s older devices, you should know that the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for Sony Xperia Z, Xperia Tablet Z, or Xperia ZR will be released in the second quarter of the year.
