We heard a while ago that Sony is readying its first Mini smartphone developed on Xperia Z1’s hardware platform, and now the guys at Xperia Blog have new details on the matter.
It looks like the rumors were accurate after all and that the Xperia Z1 Mini will be world’s first compact smartphone to be underpinned by a Snapdragon 800 chipset. Moreover, the 4.3-inch smartphone might also borrow the impressive 20.7 MP camera sensor mounted on the Xperia Z1 smartphone announced earlier this month.
All these details were unofficially confirmed by some leaked catalogues aimed for the Japanese market. Well, it seems that the alleged Xeperia Z1 Mini will go on sale through NTT DoCoMo Japanese carrier and that it will be named Xperia Z1 f.
According to the leaked catalogue, the Xperia Z1 f will come with a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. As I was mentioning above, the handset is powered by a Snapdragon 800 chipset, and we also learn that the four Krait 400 cores are clocked at 2.2 GHz.
The same leaked document reveals that Xperia Z1 Mini will come with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage (most likely expandable using microSD cards). It looks like Sony didn’t manage to squeeze Xperia Z1’s battery into a smaller case, as the Mini model only comes with a 2,300 mAh battery. In terms of size, the Xperia Z1 Mini will be a bit shorter and narrower than Xperia T, Sony’s flagship for last year.
This basically means that Z1 Mini will be more appropriate for one-hand usage than Xperia Z or Xperia Z1, which is a must-have feature for any mini model. Well, the terminal will be almost as thick as its main rival, the HTC One Mini, so don’t expect it to lose this battle.
The only reserve I have about the Xperia Z1 Mini is related to the camera. Personally, I would have preferred a bigger sensor and less megapixels. Sony Xperia Z1 failed to convince us that it’s the best Android cameraphone and I doubt that the Z1 Mini will. Moreover, the price will be one to match the technical specifications.
According to the NTT DoCoMo document, the smartphone will be available in four body colors: white, black, red, and yellow. Just like the other Xperia smartphones launched in 2013, the Z1 Mini will be water and dust resistant.
