After claims of Sony not showing off any new product at the Mobile World Congress this year, we finally are getting some indication on what we can expect from the Japanese company at MWC this year. So far, it looks like Sony will be announcing two new products at the event – a tablet and a smartphone. The tablet will be the Xperia Z4 Tablet, successor to the Xperia Z2 Tablet that Sony launched last year at MWC. In addition to the Xperia Z4 Tablet, it seems like Sony may also announce the mid-range Xperia M4 Aqua, successor to the Xperia M2 Aqua it launched last year.
The Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet announcement at Mobile World Congress was confirmed after a screenshot from the Xperia Lounge app showed off the tablet accidentally. The app didn’t reveal much about the tablet except for the fact that it will include a 2K resolution display, making it the first Xperia device to come with a higher than 1080p resolution display. XperiaBlog has accessed some official documents that also reveal the Xperia M4 Aqua smartphone. The device will be shipping with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, and so will the Xperia Z4 Tablet. The document reveals build number 26.1.A.0.xxx for the M4 Aqua and 28.0.A.0.xxx for the Z4 Tablet.
Although we do not have any confirmed specs yet on the Xperia Z4 tablet, the Xperia Lounge page did speak about the ‘latest chipset’ and ‘industry leading battery life’. Since the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 is the latest chip that most Android manufacturers are currently expected to use in devices to be announced at the Mobile World Congress, it does seem likely that the Z4 Tablet will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset. It could also be a significant upgrade in terms of battery capacity over the Z2 tablet as class leading battery life simply cannot be achieved without a huge battery being included inside. Of course, Sony’s software optimization is also likely to play a key role in delivering great battery life, as seen on the Sony Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact devices last year.
As far as the M4 Aqua goes, there are no rumors to go by for the device but recent leaked benchmarks of the Xperia E2303 with 5.2-inch 720p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core 64-bit chipset, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage 13MP rear camera and 5MP front-facing camera sure does give us a hint. Since the Xperia M2 had a similar model number last year (D2303), we can assume that the E2303 can be the M4 Aqua or another variant of the M4 with largely the same specifications. Since it carries the name ‘M4 Aqua’ it will also be water and dust resistant like its predecessor, although we aren’t sure if it will include an IP68 or lower rating.
We’re also curious if Sony might reveal the Xperia Z4 flagship smartphone at the event since last year both the Xperia Z4 and the Z4 Tablet were announced together and we also saw the Xperia Z3 family of tablets and smartphones get announced together at IFA Sony press conference last year in Berlin.
