Specs Fight: HTC One M8 vs Galaxy S5 vs Xperia Z2 vs LG G2 vs Nexus 5 vs iPhone 5S

We keep getting questions about what device our readers should choose, so we decided to write a short article and help you decide. Unfortunately it’s pretty hard to make a decision and we also couldn’t compare all the smartphones, so we decided to pick the most popular ones: HTC One M8, Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2, LG G2 and the Apple iPhone 5S.

They are all high-end flagship devices and three of them (HTC One M8, Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2) have been released this year, while the other three are a little older.

We are going to compare their display, hardware, and camera and see which one is best for you.

Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with the best display we’ve ever seen on a smartphone. It’s a 5.1″ Super AMOLED with a Full HD resolution. But the others are not bad either. The HTC One M8 and Nexus 5 feature a 5″ IPS TFT, while the Xperia Z2 and LG G2 come with a 5.2″ one and the iPhone 5S has a smaller 4″ one.

We prefer the Galaxy S5’s display, because it’s colors and sharpness are superior to the other devices. Unfortunately the iPhone 5S has a really small display and it’s only good for those who want a small smartphone.

The most powerful of them all is probably the Sony Xperia Z2, which comes with 3GB of RAM. The other Android smartphones come with 2GB, while the iPhone 5S sports just 1GB.

In terms of processing power, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a 2.5Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, while the HTC One M8 and Xperia Z2 are clocked at just 2.3Ghz. The Nexus 5 and LG G2 sport a 2.3Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and the iPhone 5S comes with a less-powerful dual-core 1.3Ghz Apple A7 CPU.

The Xperia Z2 comes with only 16GB of internal storage, while the other Android smartphones also have an option for 32GB and the iPhone has a 64GB variant too on top of that.

It’s a tough job to compare their cameras, but we are going to keep it simple and focus on what matters most: image quality.

We believe the Samsung Galaxy S5 has the best camera, especially thanks to its unique features, like the Phase detection autofocus. It’s 16MP sensor also allows you to take high quality photos and record 4K videos.

The Sony Xperia Z2 is the second in our opinion, as it also has a really good camera, while the HTC One M8’s dual 4MP Ultrapixel cameras are very good, but image resolution is pretty low and it lacks the Galaxy S5’s features. But The HTC One M8 comes with a lot of other features for its camera.

The LG G2 and iPhone 5’s cameras are pretty similar and while they aren’t as good as the ones found on the S5, M8 or Z2, they take better pictures than the Nexus 5, which is infamous for that.

If you’re looking for the best hardware and a very good camera, then you should choose between the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Sony Xperia Z2. HTC One M8 is really close to them when it comes to that, but it does look much better.

LG G2 and Nexus 5 are also powerful smartphones, even though they have older hardware. The biggest differences between them and this year’s flagships are given by the camera.

The iPhone 5S is much smaller than the others, has a decent camera, but it can’t be compared to the one found on this year’s Android high-end devices and its specs can be found on a low-end Android device.

You can choose whatever you want between the HTC One M8, Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5 if you’re looking for a high-end device, but if you want a cheaper one, we’d recommend the Google Nexus 5, considering it also comes with the stock Android experience.

Sony Xperia Z2 Articles

  • Z2 fan

Damn u fool Z2 has been crowned for the best camera…. Nd it wins it comes out with 3200 mah battery evwn the s5 is clocked at 2.5 ghz gaming and other activities are smoother in the Z2….. The guy who wrote this review is totaly wrong nd full foolishness…… Z2 RULES THE STREET

    • Denise

I was all ready for the SONY but reports of delay is because of major hardware issues and now it makes me worried

      • ShermCraig

I thought it was due to demand?

      • Z2 fan

No it was just foolishness the people they were worried about water proofing they, saw the front facing speakers and thought it was agap there is absolutely no prob in buying the Z2 for over heating during 4k recording to avoid it use 128 gb sd card suggested by
        ~sony <3

      • Jon Dwyer

You are right, most people who bought the phone complained about major over heating. Also heard there were other issues as well. I also was excited about the Z2, but I made my decision to go with the M8

    • Kevin Schlosser

In graphic rendering tests the LGG2 is the fastest processor. Dont ask me how, but I seen the results. Second was the S5.

  • kipanderson

    Gloss over much???

I laugh at every person who lauds the Samsung displays. Have fun reading them in direct sunlight! #htcwin

  • ShermCraig

Anyone know when the Z2 I’d coming out?

    • Remy Basi

Which country do you live in? I am in Canada and it will be a Bell exclusive and should arrive here sometime in May *sad face*

  • rizzo

This article should have been in a side-by-side comparison form…its a lot easier to compare and understand. Besides that, an article like this should leave the reader with the satisfaction that they are better informed to perhaps purchase one or at least recommend one to someone who is interested but this comparison falls waaaay short of doing that. I couldn’t even recommend this article to anyone and considering the subject matter it should be consumed with content…But..its just my opinion and we all have one….I still like this site so I’ll continue to visit 😛

  • jamie

This is bull. IPhone may have “just” a dual core a7 with 1th of ram, but it still rapes the droids thanks to the fact it’s 64 bit and ios doesn’t need much ram. Also, the iPhone’s camera is great Apple is not pushing boundaries in the same way Samsung or Sony are but no way are you gonna find similar performance in a low end android phone

    • Kaostheory

All of iPhones animations and scrolling are slowed down compared to the newest Androids. Of course this is what makes it smoother. But the 5s is severely laging in features. The actual tests for the Z2 put it’s camera at the top even better than the 808, add in waterproof, stereo speakers, noise canceling, better and bigger screen, nfc, fm radio, better battery life and probably a few I forgot. The 6 should be an interesting phone as Apple has a lot of catching up to do. If it wasn’t missing so many features I’d give you the 64bit as future proofing but sorry to say that won’t be enough.

      • Jon Dwyer

The 5s is not smoother than the M8, not sure how you came to that conclusion.

    • Jon Dwyer

Why are you comparing low end android phones? All of the above mentioned phones are as cheap or cheaper than the 16 gig iphone and you get a lot more storage with any of the above mentioned android devices. Not to mention the M8 easily out performs the iphone 5s and it’s 64 bit so called processor

    • Zalmen Labin

This article is a comparison of flagship phones not low end. Have you checked the price for the iPhone?

  • L dog

This is the most ridiculous review ever! The reviewer should have started by saying, “I am an employee of Samsung….”

    • cvsjksb

You are an idiot. He was stating facts. Have you seen the camera on the Samsung galaxy s5? Its pictures are better than the z2 because the z2 can only take 20megapix in a certain single with no effects. The s5 can take 16 megapixel pictures in basically any mode. Although the z2 is a great phone its camera is over hyped. Have you ever had a z1 or z2 and used its camera for the 20 megapixels? Other than that the next highest respect it can take pics is 13 megapixels… Yes I have used both.

      • Marcelokko

        Have both z2 and ss5.
Sony wins in every aspect apart of the replacement battery

        • louis

Why would you have 2 cellphones?

  • Matthew White

First paragraph of the conclusion, I want what he’s been smoking.

  • Jon Dwyer

It’s evident this reviewers opinion is being based on being a Samtard fan. He probably never even used any of the other phones when making this comparison. This was a out right joke of a review by some fanboys favoritism.

    • stupid fanboys everywhere

Have you used the phones? Cause the z2 can only take 20 megapixels in one mode. Then the next highest is 13… Which is why Samsung wins in this department. 20 megapixels is just for marketing. GG

  • Ammar sagheer

Looks like you guys are all fools…apparently samsung galaxy s5 is known for best battry and camera performance. ..and even it has a 2800 mah battry but still it beats all other smartphones in benchmark tests…its battry timing comes close to ipad air battry…but that is a tablet…so watch out guys..

  • Zalmen Labin

I wish you would’ve actually used these phones before you wrote a review. Because of writers like you I now have a Z2 sitting in my drawer while I’m enjoying the m8. Sony has the worst user interface I have ever had to endure on a phone, it was so annoying that I decided to forfeit my $700 I paid for the z2 and get the m8.

    • Christian

hahaha, that’s contrary to what most people think.. because Sony’s UI is one of the most lightly skinned android on the market

      • Zalmen Labin

Yet another person commenting on something they haven’t actually tried. In theory the Sony phone is supposed to be awesome, I hope you spend $700 to get it

        • Christian

do I have to spend $700 to experience Sony’s UI?

          • Zalmen Labin

That’s how much I paid for my phone I’ll sell it to you for half

          • Christian

If you mean to experience Z2 (the phone), then yes, I’d have to spend $700. But I’m referring to the UI (in reply to what you said regarding Sony having the worst USER INTERFACE), so no, I don’t need to spend that much to experience Sony’s UI. Get it? Nuff said.. bye..

          • Zalmen Labin

This by far is the dorkiest argument I’ve ever endured

          • Christian

yeah me too. so let’s move on from that.. but i’d seriously consider buying your Z2 for half if you’re serious with that! haha

          • Danish Sohail

SONY have a clean UI. I bought one because of its UI. I suffered a bad experience with htc one before when its camera stopped working, I would say that it blacked out:( sony is great.

          • memyself&i

can I take you up on that? I want a z2 for $350

  • Brian Johnson

Last I checked the HTC one has a full HD LCD3 screen which has been widely recognized as a high quality and more rich color experience. OLED is great for very bright colors that are not as natural and are more cartoonish. The big thing people should remember is most will enter into a two year agreement with one of these devices so choose the device that you can live with. Just because you have a bigger battery doesn’t mean anything…the iPhone has shown this over and over. Samsung and LG have heavy UI’s which need big batteries to support there features pack skins. HTC has really slimmed down the sense experience and my M8 goes the whole day easy with heavy use. Sony always builds a quality product the only question is how will they support it. Will you get updates quickly or at all. HTC has a 2 year guarantee for update support on new devices plus a 6month screen replacement program for free. But if you’re breaking a new gorilla glass screen, you’re trying to break it. My point is , it’s no longer a day for a device to have a great spec sheet but how well do all the components work together. Who cares about a 16mp camera if you use it for a few hours and you’re phone is dead. Or having 3gb of ram to power through anything but you have 16gb of memory…

  • David Feudale

iPhone sucks! Apple spends more time and effort on their advertising that they are so far behind Android these days. 4″ screen? 1GB Ram? Still using Dual-Core??? No NFC???? Come on people, Apple has been overcharging you for the under-whelming smartphones and products for years now, smarten up. Oh wait, The 5s has a fingerprint scanner!!! Useless. A happy LG G2 owner =)

  • Ismail Akram

I’ve absorbed that most reviewers are sort of in love with HTC M Series . For daily driver all prefer M8. Even most are disappointed by HTC camera but they have good feelings for ONE . I have read couple of Z2 reviews but none of them are impressed or shown like they want it .. most are leaning toward M8 then S5 then others

  • Kevin Trammell

Ok I had the htc one m7 last year great phone dark pics were horrible because of the purplish tint. Other than that it was one of the best smartphones ive ever used and ive had the galaxy s3 used my friends s4. Ive always been an android fan but was gaining curiosity for the iphone. So I sold my htc one and got the iphone 5s. 3 weeks later it was sold and back to a galaxy s5. Iphone I wont say its a bad phone, but its very simplistic. Not my cup of tea. If you dont spend alot of time gaming and adding music watching netflix yadda yadda, then its great just for a phone with good picture quality send texts n emails its great. But I found myself squinting alot with the smaller screen. Nothing major is wrong with the iphone imo, its just not my style. Now im back to andriod with the s5 and playing around with it , I couldnt be more happy. Was a touch decision to go with the s5 over the htc one m8. Both are great I just had to make a decision after playing around with them cause the store was closing lol

  • BeReal613

So Z2 is the best choice like logic has always planned.

  • anon

Z2 has microsd slot supporting up to 128GB

  • Mahmoud A. Shawish

the battery on Z2 is much bigger than on S5..
the waterproof rating on the Z2 (IP55/58) is much better than the S5 (IP67)..
the glass on Z2 is much better than the plastic on S5..

you need to review your hardware section

Samsung S5 India version is not with Snapdragon 801 2.5 GHz & to few other countries, Samsung has always been partial & loses it’s standard. Maybe a Morden tech phone but No Standard as it has no Uniformity.
