We kept comparing all the latest flagship devices, but some people don’t really need the most high-end smartphone on the market, so in this article we are going to compare some cheaper smartphones, like the Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z, Galaxy Grand 2, Nokia X, Nokia XL, HTC One and the Motorola Moto G.
We know the smartphones here have different price tags, sizes and specs and that’s why we chose them. We are going to tell you which device you should choose based on your needs.
Probably the most beautiful out of them all is the HTC One, which has a wonderful aluminium case, but it’s also one of the most expensive. As you’d expect, the best at design are those premium smartphones that have been their companies flagships back in 2013 (Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z, HTC One). Motorola Moto G also looks very good and it has a really low price tags. The Nokia smartphones look pretty cheap, but they actually are.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 also looks really well, even if its built of plastic. It comes with the same faux leather on the back as the Galaxy Note 3 which makes it look like a business smartphone.
You will have to decide if you want a cheaper smartphone, one with a big display or the one with the best display. Here we’ll compare all their display sizes and quality.
Samsung Galaxy S4 comes with the best display of them all, a 4-inch Full HD Super AMOLED with a density of 441 PPI. If display quality is what you’re looking for, then you will have to decide between the Galaxy S4, HTC One and Sony Xperia Z.
HTC One also features a very high quality display, a 4.7-inch Super LCD3 with a Full HD resolution and 469 PPI. It depends if you prefer an LCD or Super AMOLED, but both this one and the one on the Galaxy S4 are very good.
Sony Xperia Z comes with a 5-inch TFT display, with the same 1080p resolution and a 441 PPI. It doesn’t look as good as the ones found on the S4 or One, but it’s not bad either.
Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has the biggest display of them all, but lower resolution than the previous three smartphones. The 5.25-inch display has a HD resolution of 720×1280 and 280 PPI. You should choose the grand only if you want the extra size, but you will notice the difference in density.
Nokia X is the cheapest smartphone here, so don’t expect much from its display. It has a 4-inch IPS LCD with a 480×800 resolution and 233 PPI. The quality is really low, but it’s decent for it’s price.
Nokia XL The XL has the same 480×800 resolution, but on a 5-inch display, which brings density down to 187 PPI. This smartphone has the lowest density of all presented in this article, but its price is just a bit higher than the Nokia X’s.
Motorola Moto G is probably the best deal if you want a good display and a low price. It features a 4.5-inch 720×1280 pixels display with a 326 PPI. Its display has a moderate size, an HD resolution and a very good PPI, while its price is really low.
Like it was to be expected, you’ll find the best specs on the most expensive smartphones, the Galaxy S4, HTC One and Xperia Z. All three of them have similar specs.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 features a 1.6Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM and Adreno 320 GPU, while the HTC One comes with the same amount of RAM, GPu and CPU, but its CPU is clocked at 1.7Ghz.
The Xperia Z sports a 1.5 Ghz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU clocked at 1.5 Ghz, 2GB of RAM and Adreno 320.
Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 sports a 1.2 Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, which is slower than the one found on the previous three devices, but it’s still a pretty good one. It also comes with 1.5GB of RAM and an Adreno 305 GPU.
The Motorola Moto G has specs very similar to the Galaxy Grand 2, but it only comes with 1GB of RAM.
Nokia X and XL both come with a 1Ghz dual-core Snapdragon S4 and Adreno 203 GPU. The X features 512MB of RAM, while the XL has 768MB.
If you want a really cheap device, then you should choose between the Nokia X or XL. If you’re looking for a mid-end, then Moto G and Grand 2 are your best choices.
The Galaxy S4, HTC One and Xperia Z are more expensive, but have really powerful hardware.
The Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy Grand 2, HTC One, and Xperia Z should all be updated soon to Android 4.4.2 KitKat and on some carriers they’ve been already updated. Motorola Moto G has received the update internationally.
We don’t think Samsung or Sony are going to update their smartphones any further. It’s possible that HTC and Motorola to roll out another version of Android on their smartphones though, but nothing is sure yet.
Nokia X and XL come with a forked version of Android, so don’t expect any significant updates, as they won’t be based on the stock Android at all.
The Galaxy S4 comes with a 13 MP camera with an F2.2 aperture, 1/2.06″ sensor size, able to record 1080p videos at 30fps.
HTC One’s 4MP Ultrapixel camera has a F2.0 aperture, 1/3″ sensor size and has the same video recording capabilities as the S4.
Sony Xperia Z comes with a 13.1 MP camera, very similar to the previous too and with the same features. There aren’t any significant differences between the three cameras. They can all take really good images and record high quality videos.
The Galaxy Grand 2 has an 8MP camera with the same features as the previous three devices, but the image quality is a bit lower.
Motorola Moto G comes next when it comes to camera quality, but it’s not very far behind. It features a 5 MP sensor, but it’s able to record only 720p videos.
Nokia X has a 3.15MP camera with F2.8 and 1/5″ sensor size, able to record 480p videos, but image and video quality is pretty low. The XL 5 MP sensor with the same features as the Nokia X and is able to record videos at the same resolution. It takes better photos than the X, but it’s still far behind the other smartphones.
