Update Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 with CM10 based Android 4.2 Jelly Bean Custom ROM

We all know that the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101 is an old tablet on the market, but its specs and basically all its performances are actually quite good managing to provide the perfect Android experience for those who aren’t willing to spend more money for getting a better (also expensive) device. Unfortunately, it seems that ASUS isn’t planning to release and provide the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OTA update for its Eee Pad Transformer TF101 therefore you must look forward in installing a custom ROM if you want to improve the system of your tablet. Fortunately for us, now we can do this as a CM10 based Android 4.2 software has been made available by those of xda-developers and during the following lines we will be checking in how to install the same on your Transformer TF101.

Of course, this is not an official update available for your Transformer TF101, meaning that you will have to work a little bit for being able to apply the Android 4.2 OS on your handset. You will have to complete a manual operation that will take you through the installation process, but first the pre requisites must be performed, or else you will not be able to safely update your Asus TF101to Jelly Bean software. You have it all explained in this tutorial, so take your time and read the same.

The ROM is being based on the CM10 platform. This means that your Eee Pad Transformer TF101 will be installed with features and capabilities that cannot be found in the default version of the Android system. Furthermore, by learning how to update the Eee Pad TF101 with this Android 4.2 firmware you will be able to improve and power up its performances; you will gain speed, enjoy a better user interface (a custom one), improve the battery life, optimize the RAM memory and customize the looks.

Unfortunately, as this is a custom ROM (even though it is being based on CM10) there are some bugs and issues reported by the users who had tried the Jelly Bean custom ROM on their ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101. So, according to them and to our source, the issues are referring to: Sound / Audio (Gonna need a new HAL), OMX (graphics acceleration), Bluetooth, Camera and maybe more. Anyway, if you want to check other details related with the present firmware I recommend you to check our source from here. Remember that the ROM has been developed by those of xda-developers so we have them to thanks for this step by step guide.

Before heading to the steps from below, you must first backup the data of your Transformer TF101. After installing the CM10 based Jelly Bean 4.2 custom ROM all of your personal info will be erased, so you must perform the backup now. For easing your work, you can use our backup and restore guides; you can find the same by searching through our how to section. You will find there tips for saving the text messages, the market apps, the internet setting, the current ROM and more.

Then, you must root your tablet; else you can’t update it to Android 4.2. By gaining root access you will void the Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 warranty so be careful in what you do. If something bad happens and you manage to brick your device, then you will be by yourselves. The warranty can be restored though, but only by downgrading to the stock ROM (or re-install the official Android system). Of course, by doing that the root access will be revoked and the bootloader relocked. After unchaining the system you must install a custom recovery image (CWM recovery is recommended) which will be used on the update operation.

Now, make sure that you can use a Windows running computer; you will use it only for downloading some files. Then, on the tablet and also on your PC deactivate the security programs. Next, enable the USB debugging option from your device, or else you will not be able to connect the same with the computer. Charge the battery of your Asus Transformer TF101 or else the device might get turned off before ending the update operation. Do not perform this method unless you own the Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 because the Android 4.2 Rom will work only for the mentioned device.

  2. Also download the add-on package from here.
  3. Save these files on your computer.
  4. Next, after connecting the tablet with the PC (via USB cord) copy these files on your device.
