Update Galaxy R to Jelly Bean 4.2.2 with ParanoidAndroid Custom ROM

Samsung Galaxy R is a relatively interesting smartphone that has decent to high end specs, though its performances are not that impressive especially if we take a look on the market as there are more powerful handsets already available, not to mention the up-coming ones. But, you can still improve the capabilities of your device by performing some “unofficial” operations, like rooting, installing complex apps or updating with custom ROMs firmware. Well, today we will be checking on how to update your Galaxy R I9103 to latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS and this by installing the ParanoidAndroid custom software.

So, you will learn how to install a custom ROM on your smartphone. Don’t worry as the updating process is not hard to complete, though you do have to manually perform the same. Also, you first need to prepare your Galaxy R for the installation procedure that will follow therefore there are a lot of things to take care of. That’s why it is strongly recommended to read all the following lines; don’t apply things by yourselves as you can easily end up in bricking your phone.

The ParanoidAndroid custom ROM is being based on the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean firmware so if you will complete this step by step guide, the mentioned software will be updated to your Galaxy R. Therefore, now you will be able to enjoy the latest Android platform and also test and run the latest features and apps available. Furthermore, ParanoidAndroid comes with extra features too (that cannot be found in the default version of the Jelly Bean 4.2.2 system) so the performances of your Galaxy R will be upgraded.

In a few words, you will be able to customize and optimize the internal system (remove in-built programs, or files), gain more speed, improve the battery life, change the looks and the appearances, perform backup and restoration operations and a lot more. Anyway, for the full features list you can go here and check our source page. The ParanoidAndroid Jelly Bean 4.2.2 ROM has been developed and launched by those of xda-developers team so we have them to thanks for this step by step guide. Now let’s proceed in applying the pre requisites.

You first have to root your Galaxy R; the firmware needs to access some files from the internal system, this access being granted by the root operation. By rooting you are making changes into the internal system by removing the factory restrictions and default settings therefore the warranty of your phone will be void. You cannot restore it unless you downgrade the Samsung Galaxy R to stock ROM or if you reset the flash counter (the root access will be revoked, the bootloader relocked and the factory restrictions reinstalled).

Then, after gaining root access install a custom recovery image, like CWM recovery on your handset. It’s extremely important to complete this task as we will use CWM recovery for installing the update (the .zip file) on your smartphone. Be aware as the custom recovery tool can be flashed only pn a rooted system, so as already mentioned you can’t perform this operation without rooting the Galaxy R.

Finally, you shouldn’t update your Galaxy R with ParanoidAndroid Jelly Bean 4.2.2 without backing up the data first. A wipe of the system will have to be applied during the installation procedure which means that all of your personal info, data and saves will be erased. So, you will need to save almost everything that is on the internal storage memory of your device (messages, market apps, EFS and so on) and also you should make a Nandroid backup too. In this way you can be sure that nothing bad happens while updating your Galaxy R to custom Android 4.2.2.

Don’t forget that a Windows running computer or notebook, the phone and its USB cable must be near you. On both computer and handset first uninstall the security programs and settings and check the battery status on your Galaxy R because if there is less than 60% power left you will have to use the charger. Also, enable the USB debugging option on your phone and apply the next steps only if you own the Samsung Galaxy R model number I9103; completing the below procedure for installing the Jelly Bean 4.2.2 based ParanoidAndroid custom ROM for a similar device will brick your handset.

    Hey everyone,

I tried this on my Galaxy R. Have to say that Jelly bean experience is really good. But there’s a downside.. My camera doesn’t work any more. It doesn’t detect my internal memory as well as my SD card. These are serious shortcomings on a smart phone but I’m hoping there’ll be a fix to this soon.

    Cheers!
