Update Google Nexus 4 to Official Android 4.2.1 OTA JOP40D Firmware

Google has launched their Official OTA update for Nexus 4 and if you don’t want to wait for the OTA push notification, then you should use this how-to guide. Use all the instructions that I have listed in this post and learn how to upgrade your device with the latest Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean Official firmware.

This new update is only 1.1MB and it seems like it brings only a handful of fixes and functions. The December bug has been fixed just in time for the month of December. Also, the Bluetooth problems seem like were fixed. However, USB OTF still isn’t supported and this means that you might have to wait for the next update.

If you don’t want to use this manual update tool, then you can check to see if the OTA Update has been pushed for your device: Open Settings app, then tap on About Phone and check the info listed in System Updates.

If you want to use the manual method, then you should read the preparation guide listed below and learn what you need to do in order to successfully flash the Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean OTA update on your Google Nexus 4. Here’s what you need to know:

  • This is a tutorial that works only the International variant of Google / LG Nexus 4. Don’t attempt to flash this update on any other different Android device as you might brick its firmware.
  • Also, your Nexus 4 should be running a stock custom recovery and it shouldn’t rooted. If these requirements aren’t met then you cannot update your smartphone.
  • Create backups of your installed applications, SMS and other files. Note that you can use application from the Play Store.
  • Sync your Contacts with your Gmail account so that you won’t lose any saved phone numbers and contact details.
  • Download and install Android SDK from HERE. This will add the adb drivers and the USB drivers required for your device. Without these you cannot update your smartphone.
  • Enable USB Debugging option from the Developer Options menu, which can be found only by tapping 7 times on the Build Number menu in About Phone.
  • Charge the Nexus 4 battery so that it won’t power off during the update.
  • Disable all working antivirus applications from your PC. This will prevent any of these apps to interfere with the Android 4.2.1 firmware update.
  • This is a guide for advanced Android users. Do not try to flash these files if you’re a novice and you don’t know what you’re doing.
  • Do not blame us in case something goes wrong during the update and you cannot boot your phone after the installation of the OTA update. Try to create a Nandroid backup of your currently installed ROM, which you can restore if something goes wrong.

These were all the guidelines you had to read. Now that you know all of the above, I think that you should continue to the tutorial and learn how to update your phone’s firmware. If you cannot complete the install, leave a detailed comment at the end of this post and we will try to find a suitable solution.

How to update Google Nexus 4 to Android 4.2.1 Official OTA Firmware:

  1. Download the Jelly Bean 4.2.1 OTA update file from HERE. Put this file in a folder on your desktop and don’t extract its contents.
  2. Power off the Nexus 4 completely.
  3. Boot the phone up by pressing the ‘Power’, ‘Volume up’ and ‘Volume Down’ until the screen powers on. When the ‘Fastboot’ mode appears you will need to release the buttons and then press Volume UP to select ‘Recovery’ using the Power button to confirm.
  4. Now, you will notice that the Nexus 4 displays an Android logo with the red exclamation point and now you will have to hold Volume Up and Power. This will load a new menu and you have to select ‘Adb update from adb’. Confirm this and then get to the next step.
  5. Next, connect your Nexus 4 to computer using the USB cable.
  6. Go to the Android 4.2.1 folder and then you need to open a command prompt here like this: Open the folder, press SHIFT key and at the same time right-click in the white space of this folder, then select ‘open command window here’.
  7. The CMD window will now load and you have to enter the following command line: adb sideload 625f5f7c6524.signed-occam-JOP40D-from-JOP40C.625f5f7c.zip.
  8. Now the update should be pushed to your Nexus 4 and when you see that the progress bar gets to 100% that’s when the update will begin its installation process. When the install is complete your Nexus 4 will restart automatically and, when that happens, you can disconnect the smartphone from your computer.
  9. Your phone will now boot into normal mode and you start testing the new features.

These were all the instructions you had to read and apply in order to update your Google Nexus 4 to Official Android 4.2.1 OTA Firmware Update.

If you have any extra questions, then you should post them in comments.
