Even though the HTC Desire is not a high end smartphone, its performances being actually a little bit outdated, there are still numerous OS updates available for its users. Furthermore, since Jelly Bean was first leaked, more and more custom ROMs are being developed for the same device. Therefore, today we will discuss about a new firmware suitable for your Desire, the CM10 software with AOKP built. During the following step by step guide I will be teaching you in how to install the same on your handset so that you can finally enjoy the latest Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean flavor on your own HTC Desire.
The ROM was developed by those of xda-developers and according to them, by flashing the AOKP CM10 firmware you will be able to power up your phone with several features (CM based ones) and capabilities that cannot be found in the official variant of the Android platform. Also the update is being based on the Galaxy Nexus ROM meaning that you will get some of its themes, background images and looks. If you want to take a look over the features which are included in the CM10 system, then head here and search for the same.
Of course, as this is a custom ROM developed by third party devs, there will be some bugs and things that aren’t working properly too. From what we know and from what other users stated, there are issues with the Bluetooth Tethering, Butter, Camcorder, FM Radio, USB Tethering and WiFi hotspot. The rest of the features are working perfectly and as soon as a new version of the firmware will be released, the bugs will also be removed. If you like the ROM and want to update your HTC Desire with the same then read the next few lines where you can find everything you need about the installation procedure.
First of all, you must remember that this is a custom ROM and not an official update provided by HTC for your Desire. Therefore, you should consider this operation risky as you are about to make changes in your phone’s system. Furthermore, if anything bad is happening you will be by yourselves, there will be nobody to help you out. If you find this aspect uncomfortable then maybe it will be a better idea to stop here.
For being able to flash the CM10 firmware on your HTC Desire you should first root your phone. In this way you can unchain its system by removing the factory restrictions, so the new OS can run properly. If you don’t root the handset the update operation will not work. Be aware as the root access implies in voiding the warranty; you can restore it but only by downgrading to the stock ROM. After rooting you should also get and install a custom recovery image on your device. I recommend you to flash the CWM recovery as it’s the best.
A backup is being required too as a full wipe of the system must be completed (you will see how to do this a little bit later). The data which is saved on the internal storage memory of your smartphone will get corrupted so you will not be able to access it. That’s why you should first perform the backup. You can save almost everything from your Desire as there are numerous apps that can be used for backing up the messages, contacts, calendar info, call logs, internet settings, market apps and even the current ROM. You can also use a computer or SD card for saving files, but the dedicated apps are more suitable for what you need. If you don’t know how to deal with such an operation then check out our how to section and search for backup and restore tutorials.
Next, you must have access to a Windows running computer with Internet connection enabled, to your HTC Desire and to its USB cable. On the computer and smartphone there shouldn’t be any security tools running as these programs can interfere with the update process. On your handset go to “Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging” and enable the last option. Install the proper drivers on your computer and charge your device (at least ensure that there is more than 60% power left). Don’t forget to backup the data, root and install CWM on your phone.
