Update HTC Wildfire S to Jelly Bean 4.1.2 with AOKP Custom ROM

The Wildfire S is an outdated Android based smartphone, but those who still have the mentioned device can receive the latest features and apps available on the market as soon as a Jelly Bean based custom ROM is being flashed on their devices. That’s why today we will be checking on how to update the HTC Wildfire S with the AOKP Android 4.1.2 custom firmware; this tutorial will show you how to prepare your phone for the update procedure and then it will easily take you through the flashing operation, so you have nothing to worry about as you are in safe hands.

The AOKP software is not an official Jelly Bean OS rolled out by HTC for your Wildfire S. In fact you are dealing with a custom ROM, which represents an unofficial version of the Android platform. The present version of AOKP is a free aftermarket distribution of the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 software, so by applying the same on your Wildfire S you will be able to get the latest features, apps and capabilities available and all for improving the performances and the Android experience that is featured on your device.

The Jelly Bean 4.1.2 based AOKP custom ROM is stable and will smoothly work on your Wildfire S, at least according to those who have already installed the firmware. The software is coming with no bugs, issues or things that aren’t working, so you have nothing to worry about. Remember though that you have to thanks the xda-developers team for this opportunity as the AOKP firmware has been developed and offered by them. Anyway, if you want to apply the update on your HTC Wildfire S, then resume the rest of the lines from below.

The most relevant aspect when talking about installing custom ROMs is related to the warranty of your phone. Unfortunately, for being able to perform this operation you will have to first root your S, which means that the warranty will get void. A custom ROM must access the internal system of your device, and this access can be granted only by rooting the system. Therefore, skipping the root operation isn’t possible. Anyway, don’t worry, as you can anytime choose to revert to stock OS and restore the warranty. All you need to do is to update to official Android firmware and the factory restrictions along with the warranty will be restored.

Also, after gaining root access, you will have to install a custom recovery image on your phone; the stock recovery that comes pre-installed on all the smartphones can’t be used when installing custom ROMs, like AOKP. So, before going any further, flash CWM recovery (or any other recovery tool) on your HTC Wildfire S.

Right before starting the update operation you also have to backup the data which is being save don the internal storage memory of your device. As you will see during the proper steps, a wipe will have to be performed which means that all of your personal info will be erased. So, don’t hesitate and backup everything you need to; don’t forget to make a Nandroid backup as well because in this way you can safely save / and restore when needed the current ROM.

The other pre requisites are referring to: you need to use a computer or notebook where you will download the AOKP file. Then, of course, the firmware will have to be placed on your phone, so the Wildfire S and its USB cable will be used too. In order to avoid the unpleasant situation it is recommended to uninstall the security protection and security programs that are running on your computer and on your phone; furthermore you should charge the battery of your handset before going any further (if there is less than 60% power left – else you can skip this step). Finally, enable the USB debugging option on your device and you are ready to begin the update operation.

Take note that this tutorial will work only for the HTC Wildfire S, so don’t apply the next steps if you own a different device. Be aware as this is a complex and risky guide that can brick your phone; try not to mess things up.

How to Update HTC Wildfire S to Jelly Bean 4.1.2 with AOKP Custom ROM Firmware

  1. First you need to save the AOKP firmware on your computer.
  2. Get the update file from here.
  3. Then, you need to place the file on the SD card of your phone.
  4. So, connect the handset with the PC (via USB cable) and make the transfer.
  5. Then, disconnect the device and turn off your phone.
  6. Reboot the Wildfire S into recovery mode.
  7. From the recovery mode it is important to wipe the system first; so select “wipe data factory reset” and “wipe cache partition”.
  8. Then from the same menu, select “install zip from sd card” followed by “choose zip from sd card”.
  9. Select the update file from your phone and start the flashing procedure.
  10. Wait while the AKOP firmware is being installed.
  11. Finally, when everything is done, you need to select “+++go back+++” and “reboot system now”.
  12. Note: in some cases, after flashing the ROM, your handset might get stuck in a boot loop; well if that happens you need to: reboot into recovery mode again; from there repeat the wipe procedure; reboot your device; enjoy the new software.

There you have it; now your HTC Wildfire S is running on Android 4.1.2 as the Jelly Bean based AOKP custom ROM has been successfully installed on your phone. Is there any bug for this rom?

  • oddoctopus

I had a bug with the keyboard installed by default, but it can easily be changed to another keyboard (you just have to install it with an apk file, not through the play store, as you don’t have any keyboard to log in on the play store). Otherwise, really good rom, design, fast, customisable… Thanks a lot to the developers 😀

So far, pretty good. I do lose the cell to Bluetooth connection from time to time. Not sure why? The cell to phone connection seems solid but the cell to Bluetooth (my visor device) drops a lot. A flick of the power button on the Bluetooth device and it seems to “reconnect” again… strange. By in large, I’m very happy with this. Oh, and the camera and video (as reported elsewhere) are glitch, strange flickering, etc. I’ll have to look at some forums for this to see if there’s a fix.
