Update Motorola Defy and Defy+ with Jelly Bean 4.1.2 CM10 Custom ROM

The Motorola Defy and Defy Plus handsets can now be updated with the latest version of the Android system, the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 one, as those of xda-developers had managed to develop a new firmware based on the CM10 custom ROM. As usual, during a complex step by step guide we will be checking in how to apply the mentioned CM10 update on your Defy, or Defy+ smartphone. But before heading to the proper steps, you should first complete the pre requisites, which actually represents the most relevant part of this tutorial.

Now, you should learn how to install the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 based CM10 custom ROM firmware on your Motorola Defy / Defy Plus if you want to power up the performances of your phone by adding extra features into its internal system. In this way you can optimize and customize the OS so that you can receive more power and speed from your device. You should know though that the present update isn’t an official one, so the operation you are about to perform has nothing to do with Motorola. Furthermore this is also a beta release of the CM10 platform, meaning that you won’t receive a perfectly stable and smooth version of the same.

For the full list of features and reported bugs, you can anytime check our source page from here. Now, don’t worry as the devs are constantly working on improving the present CM10 update that suits your Defy and Defy+, so the bugs and issues will shortly be resolved and removed. As a final note regarding to these aspects, you must know that this is not the only OS improvement available for your Motorola device. You can easily search through our how to section for more step by step guides that can be applied for your Defy smartphones, so don’t hesitate and use the same.

Anyway, the present tutorial can’t be performed unless your devices are already rooted. If not, the CM10 ROM will not run and you will not be able to install the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update. Be aware as by rooting the warranty will get void, so if you damage the system, or brick your phone, you will be by yourselves, there’s no one to help you out. That’s why you must always follow a how to guide and not to apply things by yourselves. Afterwards, you can restore the warranty if you choose to downgrade to the stock ROM, or if you want to update your Defy / Defy Plus with an official firmware provided by Motorola.

Then, after gaining root access, you must install a custom recovery image on your phone. I recommend you to flash the CMW recovery tool as it is the most popular recovery used by worldwide Android users. Up next, you must also backup the data which is being stored on your handset’s internal storage memory, as a full wipe of the system will be required. Therefore, take your time and save all you need to. For that, you can use our suitable backup and restore guides. The tutorials are easy to understand and to apply, completing them taking only a couple of minutes.

Finally, you must ensure that you can use a Windows running computer, your smartphone and of course its USB cord. The CM10 ROM can be installed only if on the computer and Defy / Defy+ there are no security programs installed. Next, enable the USB debugging option from your phone by going to “Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging”. Also, check the battery status and if there is less than 60% power left, charge the battery of your smartphone first. Apply this method only for the mentioned devices and not for similar ones as you can end up in bricking them. And with that you can safely head to the proper steps from below.

How to Update Motorola Defy and Defy+ with Jelly Bean 4.1.2 CM10 Custom ROM Firmware

  1. Download the CM10 file from here.
  2. Also, download the Google Apps package from here as it is not included into the update system.
  3. Save the files on your computer.
  4. Take your Defy / Defy+ and by using its USB cord connect it with the computer.
  5. Select the downloaded files and copy-paste them from the PC to the phone SD card.
  6. Unplug the USB cord.
  7. Turn off the handset.
  8. Reboot in recovery mode.
  9. The recovery mode menu can be accessed by pressing and holding on the Volume Down button while pressing on the Power one.
  10. Once in recovery, from the menu displayed, choose “wipe data factory reset” and “wipe cache partition”.
  11. Return to the same menu by selecting “+++go back+++”.
  12. Now, select “install zip from sd card” and “choose zip from sd card”.
  13. Pick the update file and install it; then, do the same for flashing the Google Apps package.
  14. Wait several minutes while the process is being completed.
  15. In the end, select “+++go back+++” followed by “reboot system now”.

That was the whole thing; now you know how to manually update the Motorola Defy and Defy Plus with the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 based CM10 custom ROM firmware. Remember that this is not the official CM software, so there might be some things that aren’t working perfectly into the system. Try resetting it in the “settings” but if you got a sd card and you dont want to remove anything from it then take it out before resetting.

I’m a Defy plus user. After rooting the phone as per the instruction provided in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889325, tried to install many roms downloaded from the links given in your instruction. Some of the roms are CM10.1-20130210-NIGHTLY-mb526, CM10-20130110-NIGHTLY-mb526 etc. But i could not able to install any of them. I’m seeing “Opening update package…verifying update package…E:failed to verify whole-file signature, E:signature verification failed. Installation aborted”.

    Help me please

hi, i had the same problem. Here is how i solved it, you have to flash/root your phone first and with the defy +/ mb526 it’s not that easy so you have to go another way. I think you’re english so i send you the english instruction (there’s a german ,too). This instruction worked on my phone well, before rooting it i had the same problem 😀 How to flash(english): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1595013 , and german http://www.android-hilfe.de/anleitungen-fuer-motorola-defy-plus/228326-how-root-fuer-bl7-stock-roms-2-3-6-dfp-188-hoeher.html . And then you can install whatever you want 😀

I’m having the same problem and I don’t get how CWM can fix the problem (i have the free version of the market) but even when i use it i have the “Opening update package…verifying update package…E:failed to verify
whole-file signature, E:signature verification failed. Installation
aborted” message. So how did you do finally ?

        • Yurgh

Can the Republic wireless Defy XT557 use a custom ROM ? It has Hybrid calling tech. and if it can what is the recommended Rom? I am more interested in a larger space for apps. but performance jump would be nice. Thanks
