Even though Sony announced that there won’t be any ICS update released for the Xperia Play handsets, we still managed to leak some custom ROMs that can install the Android 4.0 software above the Gingerbread one. Furthermore, I am bringing something even better for the Play users as a Jelly Bean based firmware has just been made available for them. Therefore, during the following lines we will be checking in how to update the Xperia Play devices to Android 4.1 by flashing the new Gin2Jellybean custom ROM firmware.
This update is featuring the latest Jelly Bean capabilities and comes to improve, optimize and customize the internal system of your phone. Also it resolves some bugs from the previous versions of the Play OS, making the platform a little more stable than it used to. Being a custom ROM there are still some features that might not work properly, but according to those of xda-developers (they were the first to develop and test the Gin2Jellybean update) the same will soon be removed. But, since then, this should be perfect for you and for your Xperia Play.
We all know that the Xperia Play is an extremely interesting smartphone with the PSP buttons included along with other mid-range to high end specs. The only aspect that is really outdated is the operating system: Gingerbread. Unfortunately, as already stated, Sony announced that there won’t be any official ICS update, so it’s hard to believe that we will see a Jelly Bean OS released by the same company. Therefore, if you want to obtain more from your phone and if you want to experience the latest Android platform, then the Gin2Jellybean Custom ROM is what you need.
So, in this tutorial I will be showing you the easiest way in which you can manually install the same on your Xperia device. As you will see, completing the step by step guide will only take a couple of minutes from your time, the hard part being related more to the pre requisites. But, first, you need to know which the features that will be installed on your Xperia Play are. I have listed some of them below and for making a proper idea about this ROM you should read them before starting the installation procedure.
Gaining root access is a must have, or else you can’t apply the update on your smartphone. The result of rooting is an unchained system, so the warranty will be void. In case you brick the device, nobody will help you out. So, be careful in what you do and always follow a tutorial when trying to change or apply something on your handset. After rooting, you should install a custom recovery image on your Xperia Play. We will use the tool for making a wipe and for flashing the update file. If you will want the warranty back, you will have to downgrade to the stock ROM; then the root access will be revoked and the factory restrictions re-installed.
The data from the Xperia Play should be backed up as it might get corrupted while installing the Gin2Jellybean Custom ROM firmware. A backup is a complex operation that helps you in saving personal info from the phone’s internal storage memory. You can backup and restore almost any data you need and this by using some free distributed apps which can be downloaded from Google Play store. Furthermore, if you have a custom recovery image installed you can backup even the current ROM. You have suitable guides here on Android.gs, so don’t hesitate and use the same.
The other pre requisites are referring to the fact that you need to have access to a Windows running computer, to your smartphone and of course to its USB cable. Then, on both the PC and computer you must deactivate the Firewall or antivirus protection. Also, you must enable the USB debugging option from your phone and then charge its battery (at least ensure that it has minimum 60% power left). Don’t forget to root, install a custom recovery image, unlock the bootloader and backup the data. That’s all, so you can now safely head to the step by step guide.
