Verizon Releases Official Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4.2 OTA Update

Verizon Galaxy S3 Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update

Galaxy S3 Verizon users will soon be in for a treat as the major U.S. carrier is planning to launch the official OTA Update for their smartphone soon.

Since AT&T has already pushed the official Android 4.4.2 KitKat for their Galaxy S3 users, then you can expect Verizon to do the same thing by the end of this month. There is  no official release date, but we’ve got to look at Verizon’s System Update support document where you can find all the changes and tweaks to be added by Android 4.4.2 firmware update.

With the new KitKat 4.4.2 build you will get a major overhaul of your entire smartphone UI along with tweaks and improvements that should make this update one of the best things that your device might have ever hoped to receive.

Android 4.4.2 KitKat for Verizon Galaxy S3 will bring white status bar icons, multi-window tray for multiple new applications, help tip pop-ups, multi-window combination, Photos by Google app that replaces Google+ Photos, new Google+ User Locations widget, Backup Assistant+ Media replaced with Cloud, widgets for S Suggest, S Bookmark 1×1, Samsung Music 4×1, Music Hub removed from Samsung Hub, better Wi-Fi connectivity and stability, more Tap & Pay types support for ISIS wallet, Emergency Alerts, Verizon Remote Diagnostic update to version 2.42.167, improved data connectivity and enhanced Dialer App.

A major visual change will be seen at the lockscreen as there you notice that the camera icon shortcut is smaller and its position changed to the lower bottom part of your screen, new  support for Media Player cover art. Also, the Call, Messaging, Google and Email icons have all been removed from the Screen lock menu.

Samsung keyboard has been improved, too. Its set of Emoji Icons has been updated and now you will need to press for two seconds in order to display the emoticons. There might be some other changes and tweaks, but we will learn about them only when the update arrives.

The Verizon Galaxy S3 will get the Android 4.4.2 KK version JSS15J.I535VRUCNC1, but we cannot say for sure when. Keep an eye on all Android-related websites if you want to be one of the first to learn the official release date of KitKat for Verizon GS3 smartphone.

UPDATE: it seems like Verizon has already starting to push out the official Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update for the Galaxy S3 today while we were creating this post.

So, keep an eye on your device’s notification panel to be one of the first users to install the new firmware. Tell us after you update which are the best new features added by Verizon and Samsung. Also, make sure to test the device’s battery life and see if there is any major improvement from the previous Jelly Bean OS.

If you want to learn how to manually update your Verizon Galaxy S3 I535 with the new Android 4.4.2 ROM without waiting for the official roll out to arrive in your region, then you can check the info listed here.

My Verizon GS3 just finished the 4.4.2 OTA update. I was curious and went to update software, and was surprised it was available

    • Monika Salas

The same. & I love it!

      • Katie Conner

        Do you have emojis now?

  • chad

will the ota be pushed before the Kies update?

  • Eric Drummond

and the kitkat update is here verizon sure took there sweet time coming in behind everyone else but it good to be on the latest software

  • Ric

My S3 finished downloading the software, but there was an error and could not installed it. Is the software buggy?

  • Ant

Got my VZW GS3 OTA 4.4.2 aside from the Google Camera app — Not seeing a big change — I thought there were several new apps avail – Like the Phone / Contact app?

  • Demo_Nic

I’ve always been able to get the update as soon as they are released by going to the phone’s setting and clicking the check upda
te button located in the System, About phone at the very bottom of the settings page.

  • r0w3

anyone know when Kies will have this update available?

  • Lisa Weaver

Does anybody out there know of any os updates for the s2 even the layest jellybean would be new?!

  • Chris Smith

My Note3 has this update and is very buggy. The battery runs down so fast that I cannot leave it unplugged for more than a couple of hours, and the camera doesn’t take a picture until about 3 seconds after pressing the button.
I’ve heard of people having their phones overheat from the high battery drain.

I don’t see how this is an improvement.

    • Jacques-André Langelier

Hey Chris, I just got 4.4.2 on my S3 and noticed it improved my battery life by almost 12 hours. I had battery drain issue for 6 months now to the point that I ordered a new battery last week, turns out i don’t really need it. Now my phone last over a day easy.

  • Schausta

I received the update 6/18/14. There’s an odd icon in the system tray at the top of my Note 2. It loos like an N next to the 4G symbol. Anyone know what that is?

    • Mike Wolf

oh that icon is the NFC function.

      • John Pantzer

Thank you, Mike. I was wondering about that icon as well, and now have a way to shut it off. :-)

      • Morgan

Thank you, I’ve been wondering for a few days what it was and how to get rid of it!

  • Mike Wolf

did a manual software update check on the galaxy S3 this morning on Verizon, it said there was an update so it updated. I’m a little disappointed the phone is still using the same TouchWiz UI, I was hoping for something newer.

    • MosheBenSholom

TouchWiz is all Samsung. Along with all the garbage Samsung (and other phone makers) stick on their phones. A stock Android experience might include the Nexus, but I’ve never laid hands on one.

      • Mike Wolf

Yeah I knew TouchWiz was Samsung, I was just hoping by some miracle that the update would either kill it off/delete it from the phone and give the native Google UI, or replace it with the new S4/S5 version of TouchWiz. I guess this is why there are Google Play editions of phones.

  • jak

Got the update and so far so happy with enhancements. Wireless doesn’t jump around, emoji are now supported in stock message app but not as easy to get to as would like.
Camera is sharper and quicker to respond.
I look forward to finding more

    • Kristina

how do you get to the emoji? i got the update last night and do not see how to find emoji’s

      • Sasha

Press and hold for about 2 seconds the microphone to the left of the space bar… you’ll see several icons pop up… choose the emoji

  • MosheBenSholom

not bad. so far the only negative is i have to move fast on swiping the keyboard, or it will consider it a long press. And I mean fast …

  • Sasha

So far all of the updates seem pretty good. The ONLY thing I’ve noticed that annoys me is that my emojis that were once sent as a regular SMS is now being automatically converted to MMS… I’m sure there isn’t much of anything I can do about that… but it’s just annoying to me.

  • bryan

i do not like the white status bar on the lock screen, thats how i usually tell if its email or text or whatever and its difficult to see from the lockscreen

  • bryan

Well, if your screensaver on lock screen is white it really sucks

  • Omlu

I updated my gs3 about a week ago to 4.4.2 to find the worst battery drain I’ve ever encountered. I did a factory reset of the phone and it’s still abysmal :(
The battery setting says that “Android System” is the main culprit – it takes up about 25% of the battery. Drains about 1% a minute.

  • Rick Cook

Why did they make the Status bar White? It was more visible as Green.

    • marie

has anyone figured out how to change the status bar/notification bar back to green? I can’t see the icons in white when I have a wallpaper on my lock screen!

  • Katie Conner

How do you get the emojis to show up on your galaxy s3? I’ve read it a couple places to hold the period button and to hold the microphone button that you use to speak your text and neither of those work. That is the only thing from the update I cared about and I can’t get it to work!

    • marie

you hold down the speaker microphone on the keypad for 2 seconds, then you select the happy face emoji

      • Katie Conner

        Nope. Still doesn’t work.

  • GREG

HELLO Verizon’s S3 users maybe some one can help me I’m curious will the Verizon sch-I535pp prepaid model be updated to KITKIT IN VERY MUCH KIT IN DIRE NEED OF SOME INFO REGARDING THIS?????

ok just as I was gonna log in to post this question I was logging into my acct and in my notification bar here is what behold my eyes

    • GREG

Look what just popped up an update that’s crazy

  • Victoria Whitbred

So how do you access the new emojis? When I hold down the period button, just the weird android heads show up

    • Katie Conner

That’s what I’m trying to figure out too! I can’t get them to show up.

    • marie

hold down the microphone for 2 seconds NOT the period. you will get a strip of buttons to choose from & the smiley is the emoji button

      • Victoria Whitbred

It worked.thank you so much!! It worked!!

  • dissatisfied

The update elimimates auto switch betw wifi and 4g. It’s a DOWNGRADE not an upgrade. Buyer beware. Forces more 4g data consumption!

  • Sheary Clough Suiter

Does any one else have the problem that after the update my pictures in Gallery no longer show the date? I can’t find any place to change the setting to put the date back on? Thank you.

  • IrritatedAlittle

Verizon android 4.4.2 took away the ability to turn off emergency notifications. I don’t mind the Amber alerts, but when I am in a meeting with my phone on silent, I don’t want a blaring sound alerting me about a flood warning 30 miles away.

  • aliciaaaa

I have no color for my emojis & I hate it !
one of my friends has the same phone ( gs3 ) & her emojis 4 her phone are colored ? how can i get my emojis to be colored .
