We've been telling you about the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for Samsung Galaxy S3 and now we have a list of devices that will receive the update, once Samsung starts rolling it out. Fortunately there are a lot of Galaxy S3 devices in the list, so you're most likely a lucky user.

Android 4.4.2 KitKat should be rolled out in May on the following devices: GT-I9300, GT-I9305, SHV-E210K, SHV-E210L, SHV-E210S, SGH-T999/L, SGH-I747, SGH-N064, SGH-N035, SCH-J021, SCH-R530, SCH-I535, SCH-S960L, SCH-S968C, SPH-L710, SCH-I939 and SCH-S968C.

These Galaxy S3 devices represent almost all of them, but there are some that have been left out. We don't know if the others won't will not receive KitKat at all, or they've just been forgotten on the list.

According to Google, Android 4.4.2 KitKat only needs 512 MB of RAM to run, so it shouldn't be a problem for any flagship released in the past few years. The lack or delay of updates it only the manufacturers fault, who prefer to focus on newer smartphones in the hopes that users will update eventually, instead of waiting for updates.

If your device is on the list above, then you can rest assured that it will be updated to Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Until then, you should come by from time to time, as we keep finding out more information about Samsung's plans for the older smartphones.

The updates are expected to start rolling out in May, which is very close now. If we're lucky, we might see updates in some areas in just a few weeks. We will let you know once that happens, so you can force your device to search for updates.

Please let us know in the comments form below if your device is not on this list and we will do our best to find more information about it.

I downloaded the new version of 4.4.2 KitKat for my galaxy s3 sch-i535 and for some reason the app frostwire wasn't working properly. So I uninstalled it and now my sd card won't read properly. It'll show my videos, pictures, and music for a few minutes and then it shuts off. How do I fix this.

Reply

It can take 10 to 15 minutes to boot the first time after the update. Alternatively, reboot the phone into recovery mode and do a factory reset first.

AT&T updated my Note-3 to KitKat 4.4.2 last week.....
or didn't you know that they started already. It was a flawless and took around 10 minutes from start to finish. (I did have to re-install "Battery Doctor" that took 30 seconds).
One of the things I like is the pull down notification screen has moved the running apps to the bottom of the list and moved the notifications to the top. Otherwise I can't see any big changes. Though, it does run a little faster and I get slightly better battery life.
I was also having an issue with wi-fi intermittently refusing to connect until re-booting, hasn't occurred since the update.

I'm tired of reading and hearing about this update, it's a shame that Samsung treat users of "older" devices like s%&, at this point I really don't care about if the S3 will or will not get the update, the waiting and speculations are ridiculous

Reply
David McShane · 5 years ago

I agree with you. But if you have an "older" device, then maybe your warranty is up. If that's the case, then install CyanogenMod, a greatly popular custom ROM. My S3 has been running 4.4.2 KitKat since December.

Reply
Pumpkin King · 5 years ago

To be fair it should be coming within the month...And is a 2012 flagship where as most 2013 flagships just got Kitkat a couple months ago or are still waiting. The S3 even got 4.3 where as most 2013 flagships did not or it took even longer to get.
So a 2012 device received on update faster or just at all that many 2013's did not or took a while.
And is about to get the lasted within the same time as the newer ones. Being a couple months later, sameish, or faster than some....

I understand wanting the update...But Samsung is offering many more updates in a much more timely manor and for many more devices.

Good. Now finally I can stop deferring 4.3.

Reply
Arfyness · 5 years ago

Yeah! That's going to be REAL nice to not have. I'm going to try Omni, not wait for Verizon to release theirs in, what, November?

Edit: Fml it just popped up while I'm trying to submit this comment!

Reply
James Whale · 5 years ago

Why would you defer 4.3? It brings TRIM functionality to the Android filesystem, which is alone worth the upgrade.

Reply
Jezza819 · 5 years ago

I don't know what TRIM functionality is. But I'm deferring because there has been a lot of problems with 4.3 and I've already gone through one bad update and was able to roll it back to 4.1.2. Now they've put something on there that won't allow you to do that. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Reply
jeff · 5 years ago

4.3 has no glitches. If you are still on android 4.1 you are missing out!! 4.1 sucks compared to 4.3

Uhm... what about S3 mini? GT-I8190?.. still stuck on Jelly 4.1.2 in south Africa

Reply
Moni Mihailov · 5 years ago

yeah, what about the GT-I8190? It has 1 GB of RAM and if it runs Jelly Bean OK, why won't it run KitKat (the most light android version to date)?

Reply
Lubo Bachev · 5 years ago

Because the mini's are never updated. The galaxy s4 mini doesn't even have Android 4.3.

Reply
vliegmot · 5 years ago

S3 mini is staying on 4.1.2. Just like the s2

Please give a link to the information you found. Citing sources is critical to maintaining your credibility.

Reply
Ro · 5 years ago

Where is your source by the way. Now I'm beginning to become wary of the genuinity of this article. Articles without a source should really be trusted lightly.

Reply
Ro · 5 years ago

I think my heart just skipped a beat!!! GT-19300 IS ACTUALLY ON THE LIST!!!!!!!! THAT HAS MADE MY DAY!!!!!!

I hope this is accurate information though. That would mean that the GT-19300 will have had 23/24 months of software support which is 6 months more than Google's recommendation of 18 months. But that is just a recommendation so firms like Samsung can do whatever they want. I still have high hopes for Samsung and I would be disheartened if they end software support and do not release KitKat just like they did with the Samsung Galaxy S2.
