Android users that love to customize their devices should know that they can easily sync the Contacts stored in their phone with the device's designated Gmail account.

This trick helps you keep your phone, Google+ contacts and all the other profiles synced with your Gmail Account, the one you're using the Google Play Store and with all the other Google services. This feature is great and you can easily perform all the changes and syncing in several steps.

Syncing contacts with Gmail account comes in handy when you want to root/ update the firmware of your phone. As you know, while rooting or updating firmware you're risking to damage data files, SMS text messages and contacts that could get corrupted or lost. That's the reason I've created this article, to help you sync the stored Contacts in your Android phone with your Gmail account successfully.

Before moving to the tutorial guide you need to make sure that your Contacts are linked with the Gmail Account.

  • Open Contacts.
  • Press the Menu/ Settings button.
  • Select 'Merge with Google' and then confirm the action. In case you have more than one Gmail accounts then select the one you wish to use as default to host your contacts.
  • When everything has been successfully merged, a pop-up message will notify you.

Here's how to sync your contacts with the Gmail account:

  1. Make sure that you have Gmail installed on your device.
  2. Open the App Drawer and go to Settings, then go to 'Accounts and Sync'.
  3. Enable the Accounts and syncing service.
  4. Select your Gmail account from the e-mail accounts setup .
  5. Make sure that you've enabled 'Sync Contacts' option.
  6. Press 'Sync now' button and wait until all the phone contacts have been successfully synchronized with your gmail account.
  7. Now open Gmail in your computer's web browser and click the Gmail text link that is listed on the upper left side of the Gmail profile.
  8. Select Contacts and then you should see a page where all the contacts from your Android smartphone have been stored.

That should do it. If you have any other extra questions then please feel free to ask me in comments.

After you've backed up/ synced contacts from your Android phone and then you've also changed the ROM or, you've rooted the phone and selected factory reset, then you will need to sync again the Gmail account with your phone and, all the phone numbers will be restored. Otherwise all the contacts will be removed from your phone.

I just got a new S7. Somehow, I have a ton of contacts now, many of which are simply email addresses, probably from my gmail. They're useless to me on my phone, as I only want contacts with numbers. How can I streamline the contacts on my phone to get rid of the pesky "email only" names?

As a side note, I don't see any contacts when I log in to gmail on a web browser.

Hello, if it's still relevant - in the menu of contacts you go to parameters than after the section general info you need to click synchronise now. This will start the syncronisation with all the accounts that you've added

I tried doing what you said but it didn't work... So I tinkered around a little. It turns out that my contacts were saved on my SIM card, so I tried selecting the 'Import from SIM card' option under Contacts. Now each contact is duplicated -- one with a SIM card icon at the bottom right and the second with a Google icon instead. Then I tried pressing the 'Sync now' option and my contacts finally appeared in my Gmail contacts. Hope this helps whoever had the same problem!

hi sara..I too was able to get the contacts from my phone to Gmail account via import/export -- but when I added a new contact in my phone, its not appearing in my Gmail contacts (my sync is on, of course).. Other than repeatedly performing the import/export exercise, any other ideas to make this "Phone to Gmail" sync automatic?
My observation is "sync" only syncs from Gmail to Phone (and it worked when I added a new Gmail contact, it appeared in my phone right after the sync occured)..

None of this seems to work or even be close. There is no Menu/Settings button associated with contacts. Just search, groups and + so I can't select Merge with gmail. And even though gmail is supposed to sync contacts and the latest sync was a few minutes ago there are no imported contacts on my gmail page. Maybe I just need to do the Merge. Can you help me find the Menu/Settings button under contacts?

Everytime I do a contacts restouration from google account, after an upgrade, all the individual contacts settings are lost. Like the default call number and even the linked accounts. I have more than 1,500 contacts imported from all my books (yahoo, skype, gtalk, hotmail, facebook, etc), so after every restore, I have to individually set again the default call number and the linked accounts. This drives me crazy...
Does anyone have any idea how long would take Google/Android guys to fix this huge bug or how hard would it be? It just needs a new checkbox in the Google Contacts database to remember the default selected number for each contact.
Although the max 5 linked accounts are saved to google database, it's strange why the restoration doesn't keep those in the phone Contacts book.
Any ideas? Thank you.
