SK Telekom and Samsung has released the official Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for all their Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus users. Check the instructions listed in this post in order to learn how to successfully install the new Marshmallow update manually without waiting for the firmware files to arrive over-the-air.

The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update is bringing Doze, App Permissions controls, Google Now on Tap, Improved TouchWiz interface and tons of other great improvements that should offer you a better Android experience. Before starting the installation process of this new official firmware you should check the guidelines below.

The preparation steps will tell you what requirements your Galaxy S6 Edge Plus phone needs to meet in order for you to be able to complete the update using Odin at your first attempt.

Preparation Steps:

Use this tutorial only with the Korean edition of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus devices on SK Telecom network.
Your phone's model version has to be SM - G928S. Check its edition under Settings> About Phone> Build Number section.

Download the Samsung USB Drivers from here and install them on your computer. The USB Drivers will allow you to connect your phone to your PC via usb cable.

For the updating process you will use the Odin tool. Odin requires Samsung KIES to be disabled, as KIES will attempt to block any connection between Odin and your smartphone.

Enable USB Debugging for your phone from its Developer Options menu.
The Developer Options menu might be hidden which is why you will have to unhide by going to Settings> About Phone where you can tap 7 times on the Build Number section.
Return to Settings, scroll down and there you will find the Developer Options. Open it and then enable USB Debugging.

If your device is rooted and you install the official update using ODIN, then you need to know that root access will be lost in the process.
In case your phone has a custom Recovery installed on it, too, then you will see it replaced with a stock Recovery image.

You can flash the update over a custom ROM, too, but this will mean that you have to 'factory reset' the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus device after the update process is done.
The 'factory reset' wipes clean the system partition, it removes the custom ROM and it will then allow your phone to boot in normal mode.
Factory Resetting the phone won't remove any data from the internal storage.
The factory reset steps are listed at the end of this this post.

If your phone is running 100% stock Android firmware, then you can get straight to the installation part of this post.

Read the whole post first and do not skip any steps.

The battery charge level of your phone has to be over 40%, so that your Galaxy S6 Edge+ won't power off during the Android 6.0.1 first boot process.

Use the tutorial only in case you are an advanced user, we cannot be blamed in case you brick your device nor in case you lose any important data files during the installation. Make sure to create backups of all the important files that are currently stored on your phone.

If you are unsure about using this tutorial, then it would be best for you to wait until Samsung pushes the new official update over-the-air in your region. You can also check for new firmware files by going to Settings> About Phone> System Updates. If there is any new firmware file ready to download, then you simply need to allow the phone to take care of the rest of the process automatically.

Important Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS features:

Doze is a brand new technology added by Google and now available for all devices running the Android 6.0.1 firmware. Doze will greatly improve the battery standby times as it will learn from your actions and only keep the most important apps running, while blocking those apps that you use rarely. You can also set some apps to stay alive always, but you can also block some apps from running when you're not using them. Doze is fantastic as there are some annoying applications that used to stay awake in previous Android builds and this change comes at the right time for the Galaxy S6 Edge users.

Google Now on Tap is a new way of interacting with Google Now, as it will provide useful info about the data shown on your phone's screen, when any individual apps is opened. Tap the home button on your phone when you're reading a movie review, listening to a new song or reading any interesting article in order to pull-up some new info about your interests.

The new Google App Permissions allows you to block various apps from accessing camera, microphone, storage or any other part of your phone without your knowledge. If you think that some apps are logging your location or looking through your contacts, then you can simply go to its App Info section and hit the Permissions tab to block it from doing any unwanted spying.

  13. Unplug the phone from PC after it reboots and then wait for the boot to complete.
  14. Use your default login info in order to regain complete control over your device once again.

If the 'optimizing apps' menu loads on your phone, then the update was applied successfully and you can close this guide.

If the installation fails for any reason, then you should check the extra info below and see if you can find a solution and complete the update.

NOTE 1:

If Odin shows the FAIL alert, or any other error is displayed by your device, then you will be forced to try and repeat the whole tutorial more than once.

If you repeat installation, then you have to make sure that you won't be skipping any steps and that your Galaxy S6 Edge Plus phone meets all requirements listed above.

NOTE 2:

If the PASS alert is shown by ODIN, but your smartphone doesn't go past the boot animation screen or it enters in a boot loop, then you will be forced to 'factory reset' the smartphone.

If you have installed the official firmware over a custom ROM, then you will also need to apply the 'factory reset' steps below in order to make sure that your phone will reboot in normal mode. Here's how to it: power off the phone and then boot it in Recovery Mode, here you need to select 'wipe data/ factory reset'. Confirm process and reboot the phone in normal mode after the factory reset is done.
