The LG K20 Plus is a mid-range Android based device but that shouldn’t mean you cannot experience the latest features, games and apps without dealing with software related problems. And if the stock Android OS isn’t exactly offering the right environment for testing new capabilities, the Lineage OS 15.1 ROM will manage to change everything you used to know about your smartphone. Basically, if you’re ready to tweak your LG K20 Plus and initiate different other customizations, now you can do that with the help of the Android 8.1 Oreo based LineageOS 15.1 update package.
Thanks to xda-developer senior member Travisholt92, the Lineage OS platform can be successfully booted on the LG K20 Plus. The ROM will bring a stable, yet modified version of Android 8.1 Oreo OS on your K20 Plus so now it will be a great chance to experience everything that’s new on the Android system in terms of features, apps and capabilities. Additionally you will be able to change the default functionality in order to speed up your smartphone and for receiving better results on a daily basis. And with the right optimizations you will be able to upgrade the battery life and general performance regardless of what apps and processes you will choose to run on your LG branded handset.
Lineage OS 15.1 is a custom ROM. It’s not an official Android 8.1 Oreo software but a free aftermarket distribution of the stock firmware. It’s developed by third party devs and cannot and shouldn’t be associated with LG or with Google. Therefore, it can be only manually installed and only by following the steps from below. Moreover, do note that you are about to complete an unofficial update operation: you will lose the LG K20 Plus warranty, which can be restored only if you choose to reinstall the stock Android OS.
Unlock the LG K20 Plus bootloader before trying to set up the Android 8.1 Oreo powered LineageOS 15.1 ROM. Do that as otherwise the new OS cannot be installed – it will have to access and modify built-in settings and features and that can happen only on an unlocked bootloader. And, in the end make sure that TWRP recovery (or any other similar custom recovery image) can be used on your phone. It’s essential to flash a custom recovery image because the custom ROM package can be installed only through a custom recovery environment.
You will have to make a hard reset and clear app data cache on your LG K20 Plus because without a full wipe performed the Lineage OS 15.1 software won’t run properly. That’s isn’t a problem, but you should secure your personal files for avoiding unpleasant situations – just backup your contacts, call logs, texts, images, videos, audio files, market apps, internet settings, calendar info, saved passwords, or IMEI / NVRAM data. LG already pre-loaded cloud storage apps on your phone while you can use an external storage device, you can sync files with your Google Account or download already tested backup and restore apps from Google Play.
A Nandroid backup can save a copy of the current Android system that runs on your LG K20 Plus. It’s recommended to perform this additional backup process as it can help you go back to stock if the new Android 8.1 Oreo custom ROM system will not run as you expected.
You don’t have to use dedicated flashing programs for completing this update operation. But, you have to use a computer for downloading the required files. Also, your phone and its USB cable should be at your disposal.
On your K20 Plus access Developer Options from Settings. If the field isn’t displayed there, go to About Phone and tap repeatedly, for 7 or 10 times, on Built Number. Keep tapping on that field until the ‘you are a developer’ message is returned. Finally, from Developer Options check the USB Debugging option.
Charge your Android device before initiating the update operation – at least plug in the charger if the power that’s left is lower than 50%. A sudden shut down that happens while you try to set up Lineage OS can soft brick the Android UI that runs on your K20 Plus. So, charge your phone if you want to avoid any possible Android malfunctions.
